I’m doing Ludum Dare this year with another member on these forums. It’s a new team, but we’ve collaborated well before. This will be my third Ludmum Dare (see my signature for my past entries). Every asset needs to be made from scratch and you must work alone for the compo, but the simultaneous jam lets you bend these rules, so you would have to enter the jam if using 2D toolkit. The compo also requires you to be able to provide source code. Because I’m in a team, we will be entering the jam, not the compo. I hope the theme is something useful. The best of luck to you.
It will go well, even if it is your first time. My first Ludum dare entry came in 25th in overall, 23rd in innovation, 9th in mood, and 7th in theme. there were hundreds of entries.
@wccrawford
good to know. I thought all code and assets needed to be made from scratch.
That is good to hear! Do you happen to know how using something like 2d toolkit works with their policy that you must include all source code? Would I maybe just delete the 2d toolkit source code before submitting? I don’t want to redistribute something I shouldn’t.
That’s what I plan to do. Just like you wouldn’t send Unity’s source along, you don’t send the toolkit’s either. Of course, you have to note that you used it.
Edit: Just copying the rules here for clarity.
As you can see, “all game code and content” has to be created during the contest. A toolkit is not ‘game code’, it’s more of a library. And it just has to be publicly available, not ‘free’.
Ill be in it this year. Last year was a complete fail as it was my first one and I failed to create anything fun.
As for the rules. Yeah you won’t be able to use 2Dtoolkit because it isn’t available for everyone. I Think you can use some free 2D kits such as Othello or RagePixel.
I’m going with FlashPunk + FlashDevelop though. Unity physics has bitten me in the ass more than once. Models are incredbly time consuming and 2D is damned in Unity. I love it, but it’s not my personal choice for a 48 hour jam.
They said they are entering the Jam not the Compo. The Jam is for teams…
Back on topic I’m considering entering the Compo, although it doesn’t work well in Aus… I have to go to work Monday so I lose about 10 hours assuming I get a few hours sleep before work.
I will be participating in the Jam, just picked up 2DToolkit in the latest daily sale so will try that out.
If a 2D-Artist is interested in collaborating on a Top Down Space Game for the Jam.
