Solus 2.5D Platform WIP

Hi everyone

I wanted to create a thread for a few weeks but wanted to wait until I actually have something to show…hopefully people will like it.

I have been playing around with Unity on and off for over a year now and have finally settled down on creating my first game.

Solus is a 2.5D platformer game which is aimed to be published to iOS and other mobile devices.

You take the role of Solus…

He was accused of stealing the power cores to the city, resulting in it slowly losing power. Solus escaped the city and is now in exile until he can clear his name…

The only way to do that is to seek out those that stole the cores and get them back.

The game will hopefully feature a number of power ups, puzzles, as well as hidden levels.

I will update this thread with more updates, until then here are a few bits of artwork and screenshots.

Platforms Here are a few examples of the platforms that will be featured in the game.

ScreenShot - The GUI still needs improving and a few changes in the environment to make it look a little better IE tress etc.

Hi

I have been working on improving the background to give it more depth whilst also adding a few game play elements.

I still have a lot to add and improvements made to the GUI - I have done a quick game play video on the first level I am working on. Please excuse a bit of lag

That looks great.

Is it lagging out when the you jump on stuff, when the “Bonk” cloud comes up, or does the character just slow down there?

Thanks

I still need to do a few things to improve the frame rate etc. I need to also tweak with the delay on the things being removed IE the turtle being de spawned

I really like the platforms. The foreground doesn’t stand out from the background much though. Maybe you should consider adding some fog or something?

Thanks

Yeah I did have the fog but deactivated it when editing and doing the video - your right though looks better with a bit of fog

I agree, +1 for the fog

Love and character and art style!

The main character looks much better in front view than side view. Especially when he is in exact side view and you can only see his nearest eye. Can you cheat him toward camera a bit? It is often surprising how much camera-facing cheat you can get away with before things start to look off. Also, the realtime shading is not nearly as cool as the pre-rendered stuff you have in your first post. Can you add some pre-rendered shading and turn down the realtime shading a bit (by adding ambient light)? And finally, the character looks a touch low-res. I think you can get away with a few more polygons (but of course this is just a guess).

Anyway, not sure how feasible all of this is. The game looks very nice as is

Thanks alot of the comments

Ill take a look into your suggestions and see what I can get away with doing

As its for mobile, I am planning on removing the real time shading and use light mapping (just have to figure out how :))

Thanks again!

Hi

Its been a little time since I have made an update.

I have just posted a new video showing game play footage, this video shows a change in the textures used as well as sound effects etc.

GUI graphics will still be updated soon

You should really smooth out your movement, as it should be easier to move a little bit instead of getting max speed at once.

Thanks for the feedback.

The video was lagging a little in areas - but I am hoping to revisit the movement soon to try and make it run a little smoother

I am sorry I have not updated this thread in some weeks.

I have finally finished 95% of the first level, the only thing missing is some additional effects and sound effects. I have started an example of the snow area, and will hopefully have a screenshot soon.

I have been working on improving FPS as I had it running at only 2 on my iPhone4.

I did the following and managed to get it up to 25

  • Removed mesh colliders and added box colliders
  • Removed iTween actions
  • Used cartoon mobile friendly shaders
  • Removed the moment from the collectibles (issue with colliders not having rigidbodies)

Hope to get some screens up shortly

Looks exactly like Manuganu (very good game, actually)
I would recommend to remove hero’s rotation while jumping, it’s a bit annoying, and would add it while double jumping.
Back music is rather good, but the game is not so colorful. Try to make colors more juicy.

Thanks!

I have recently seen that game so I am trying to get further away from it, IE change of texture styles etc

I will look into the characters jump as well as adding a double jump into it.

I do have a more up to date shader so I think this has improved it - will hopefully get a video up soon

Really awesome!

Thanks a lot!

Hi all

I have been on holiday so this has delayed development a little bit.

I have however started doing some more, I have started an example snow level, which I think is coming on well. As well as this I have been playing around with the interface and came up with the following;

As well as this I wanted to do some tests on the start up menu, id be interested in peoples thoughts

I have added a playable demo of the first level, just to get some feed back if possible

You will need the latest unity web plugin which can be found here: Unity Real-Time Development Platform | 3D, 2D, VR & AR Engine

The demo is currently on my blog: zidasstudios.com - zidasstudios Resources and Information.

I would appreciate any feedback - good or bad

My notices:

  1. when you die, there is a strange effect of this green guy’s eyes when he is falling back.
  2. when you die, I think you should only play that death music, not the general back music, now they both are played.
  3. this guy can’t jump through the moving platform, but when he stays under it and the platform moves down, this guy “goes” through it.
  4. if to fall right after the first moving platform, the game is not restarted, I only see the blue background.
  5. it’s possible to start jumping after you started falling.
  6. enemies are difficult to see behind the fence.
  7. there is a red diamond in the game, I came to it but nothing happened.
  8. horizontal moving platform has labels “wait” and “move up”, I couldn’t collect the gems above it first, but then I could (after a death).
  9. if you have 0 lives and fall, you start the game again, the number of lives is still 0.
  10. I like the animations of this guy, but the jumping is strange sometimes.

I couldn’t complete the level. On the whole, I like such games, but this one feels a bit difficult to play. I can’t explain in words, I just feel it’s not convenient to move the green guy. I think the background is a bit empty - add some more things, in addition to the hills. And I would prefer to see more colorful objects. Now your colors are very bland for me - the game is not colorful for my taste.
