[Solved] Crash on start: Could not load a transcoding service

I just installed the 2015090301 build on Linux Mint. When I attempt to run the editor it shows the splash screen for a second, then crashes. The log ends with: Could not load a transcoding service.

Using the same build on another Mint machine has been more successful. I got through some tutorials and ran a few experimental projects.

Log attached.

Interweb suggests this error is related to iconv.
As a workaround, try running with LC_ALL=C ?

No luck with LC_ALL=C… although it did fix another issue unrelated to Unity, so thanks

This makes me think something is not right with my system in particular.

This is working for me now. I was in a bit of a rush to try the suggested fix and set it in the wrong environment. Whoops.

There was previously no LC_ALL at all, and everything is now good with LC_ALL=“en_AU.utf8”.

Thanks again!

For anyone else who might have this problem, and the proposed solution does not work: My LANG environment variable was (somehow) set to “cinnamon.desktop” (basically an invalid locale). LC_ALL did not work for me. Instead, I had to reset the correct LANG (System settings > Languages) and restart.
