[SOLVED] Unity interface frozen on second startup

Every time I open Unity, besides the first time running after a fresh install, the whole interface seem to be frozen with the exception of the buttons that open some kind of windows menu (the top menu bar, the “create” button in the file viewer, right clicking in the hierarchy window).

However, lets say I open a project with 3 folders. If I click folder number 2, there’s no response from the interface, but when I reopen the project, folder number 2 is selected, so I assume the engine is actually running in the background, just the interface visualization is frozen.

Things I tried:

Reinstalling (fixes for the first run).
Updating graphics drivers.
Ensuring the right GPU is being selected at the NVidia control panel
Forcing OpenGL, DX9, DX11
Stopping Avast
Stopping every single thing I could stop from running in the background.
Creating new projects (before or after fresh installs)

And I’ve ran out of ideas. I got a friend that has been working with Unity for a good 2 years now and he had no Idea what else to do.

Small edit: When I try to resize the window when it’s frozen, it gets either full black, or full white, or some mixture of both (as if each section of the editor would get either a white or black tint.

More edits: I’m running Unity 5.0.1f on Windows 8.1, on a Dell XPS 15 L502x, almost 3 years old. It is a bit banged up, but I can still run most games just fine, like Diablo 3, Dota 2, FFXIV, Guild Wars 2, with some of them freezing here and there but still pretty much playable. And I can also run the Unreal Engine 4.

Specs here:

What’s your system specs? CPU? GPU? How much ram? Desktop/notebook/tablet? Custom built/big box?

Edit: brand new? Ten years old? Does it run every other game/program fine?

Yeah I forgot this part, will edit onto the OP

Hmmm yeah more than capable machine. I couldn’t tell you what is going wrong but maybe try unity 4x out and see if the same things happen. At least that narrows it down to either every version of unity or just 5x…

Well, Version 5.0f was also doing this. I’ll try with a 4.x version and report back

Also might try doing compatibility settings on 5x - just silly stuff like run in windows 7 settings or something. Maybe, but I doubt it, but just maybe some compatibility setting could get around whatever brings things to a halt…

Edit: Oh also even if it ran on the integrated card (the 3000 Intel one) it should still work fine. It might be a performance drag but if it worked it’s better than nothing I suppose.

Apparently running it as administrator fixed everything.

I have no idea.

Ahhh ok cool.
