Some stupid question

Someone who develops a game and uses alot scripts that isnt his own scripts (someone’s else script’s), is he called a game developer?

You are right. That’s a stupid question…

I think yes, the game developer part is dependent on the end game, you’d still be a game developer even if you never wrote even a single line of code, as long as you’ve got a game to show for it.

Some might call them a script kiddie (someone who reuses others scripts - often taking credit for things they did not do!), but at the end of the day I guess we all started that way no? Gotta learn how to do things one way or another, although thats not the easiest/best way to learn lol. I’d say he is a hobbyist developer, just learning how to do game design overall, rather than learning the specifics of any one discipline. But that would be a really nice way to put it haha.

Uh, yes. They may be unjustifiably puffing up their chest as if they were exceptional at programming but don’t take the bait.

Let’s hope those game programmers are using and obtained that code legally.

Aren’t the programmer whose scripts are being used not using another programmer’s game engine, so many other programmers’ APIs, compilers, operating systems, system utility, BIOS, the SW to design both SW HW.

So what makes this fictional game programmer you ridicule unworthy to use all of the above when all of the above was designed for the game programmer to do just that?

I’d say they would be foolish not to use the above or I have an ideal, let’s make this ‘game programmer’ first IR&D mining and manufacturing the HW that he’ll need for his game. And I mean he really has to mine, smelt, and all that other good stuff. Let’s make sure he is a ‘real’ programmer and requires that he can’t use prior art or knowledge either. After all can you truly be a game programmer using someone else’s hardware or programming? We want proof of real talent. Please.

Since game developer is just a generic term that means someone who had a hand in shipping a game to market, then sure.

A game PROGRAMMER on the other hand would be a hell no. You would just be a script kiddie.

Unless you start by inventing your own hardware architecture from the ground up* then you can’t avoid building on top of other people’s stuff. So it’d be silly to dismiss people based on just that.

  • And that’s assuming that we’re starting from computer science, which itself builds on a lot of other science. So really, we have to go back to bashing rocks together…

Isn’t a game developer just pretty much anyone in the flow of game development, it could refer to designers, programmers artists and probably even sound designers and such. A designer is proboly using lots of code that a programmer wrote but I think is still called a developer.

Say you wanted to make a backgammon game. And you had these components:

  1. Opensource backgammon engine
  2. Royalty free 3D models for pieces
  3. Clipart for menus and buttons
  4. Royalty free sound clips and music

Then if you have the skills to put all these things together you can call yourself a game developer. Why not?

It’s like Dell Computers. They don’t make any of the parts themselves but they are still computer manufacturers.

what do you think unity3d and playmaker are for? there are also other programs that will help you make games. lol no need to feel down because you are using scripts. write code in binary said “real programmers” to those writing in assembly. write your code in assembly said “real programmers” to fortran… Cater to the players playing your games and i doubt they will care you used scripts or visual scripting :sunglasses:

Just copy paste the executable for World of Warcraft and then you’re technically a game developer.

That question has no context. Everyone who replied to this post has used someone else’s code snippets. Hell, there is a reason Unity has a market full of code for people to purchase. I hope people yelling script kiddie never put anything on there. I just might link here to let your future customers know how much you hate them :wink:

That said, if you’re just throwing random scripts together to make some sort of unplayable mess of incoherent scripts, I’d say no. But as other’s have said, game developer is rather ambiguous. The person who writes the game manual is technically part of the development process. Heck, the accountant is even in the credits.

Yes but if it goes public/Famous they must give credit/Share of the money so I guess you could say sure they are
