but will it rise again?
It will, or the politicians will sweet talk the public into a “better compromise”, which in this case, would lower public resistance.
There is no stopping them from trying to establish a media monopoly over the internet.
It should rise again. There is a problem. We should not resign ourselves to a choice between a bad solution and no solution.
If it rises again. I hope it does without these 2 elements
I fully understand the need to fight piracy. Piracy is ruining people’s livelihood’s as well. But you do not rob Peter to pay Paul
It has not been canceled. It has been delayed. A victory would had been for the vote to go through AND lose.
As it stands, what they did was just delay things, hope the press stop focusing on it, and then attempt to awake the vote quietly when no one is looking.
Don’t celebrate yet, don’t lay back thinking we won. We have not won. This is still in the table.
Also, just read this at Penny Arcade and I think he nailed it:
Well, if Congress realizes how harsh the legislation was, then maybe that would have just READ THE CONSTITUTION before bringing this up before rushing to make such a law passed. Because in its current state, only one tenth, maybe not even that, would even be constitutional at all.
Bugger this, I’m going to become a politician, at least that way there’d be one person in power that I could trust my freedom to.
Any big sport events coming up in the states? Im sure it will happen in the background
super bowl is coming up and your might be right.
The right way is just having law enforcement build a case, coming round and kicking your door down like megaupload. That is the correct way. Not controls and bills.
The legal enforcement way is far more expensive and requires evidence and so on, but it is the accepted way we deal with and crime in most countries. Internet should be no different.
Sounds like a great way to make most countrys go broke, we are already quite screwed up sending police around to nearly every household to get there illigal music, movies, games, pictures and programs wont work. Even some police would have pirated stuff on there pc.
The internet will never be ruled, neither will piracy its something that we must live with, there a milions(proboly billions) of sites with pirated material on them.
(I would continue my rant but my mum is winging for me to go move some mulch )
Titanty, dont think he is proposing for cops to go into houses checking for piracy, but for law enforcement to intervene after getting a proper legal order by the court.
Also: never say never. If things keep going the way they are, the future of digital media will be encased in devices like the iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet, and XBox. Devices that are not easy to casually hack into. Piracy may not be entirely killed, but it will drastically shrink once most computing devices become restrictive off themselves.
Think it’s kinda understood it would be the worst offenders and uploaders. I think those people should get the smackdown.
It’s like drugs. You go after the pushers, not the users.
But it would be so easy to escape the law… what if i just go to a internet cafe with hundreds of torrent files and upload them? then they cant track the source and hundreds of people distribute that torrent file in the end at every police station they would need people that only go and get people uploading torrents and sharing them in the end there would be so much that they couldent keep up with the problem.
Taking down the websites is one of the only ways to stop piracy.
I think instead of SOPA they shoould make OS makers responcible to protect files saved on peoples computers, they need to start having laws against modding devices like Iphones, PS3 etc and then it would all be much better.
For the most part, it is the torrent host that needs to be taken down (having the police go into and bust them like they did with Megaupload.)
Also torrents don’t really work the way you describe. You need to keep your computer running seeding the file until enough people are seeders themselves. Don’t think many cafes will give you enough bandwidth or tolerate you enough to get to do that much uploading done.
Sounds pitifully easy to track the source in that situation. Maybe hold off on the whole hiding from the law thing for a while.
Sopa is a excuse for them to to take over the internet, What is the one part that the goverment cant control ? the internet and they cant stand that, we can say all we want on the internet, this is the one place where everyone has a voice, sure they say that they will only remove the bad sites, but once they can bann eveything they want, the internet will not be a place where we can speak whatever we want…if u support sopa you support communism, thats how i see it.
And that has stopped who in the USA?
If we were in europe, fine, thats one thing, but in the USA stuff passes, as law and just in the shadow, that even violate the human right contract signed by all western countries decades ago (freedom of speech vs censoring of news as a big enough one that even US tv viewers should have realized it by now I guess - thats where the DNS ban becomes scary if it gets used as weapon against bypassing the gov controlled censoring, because the definition of illegal material can be extended without all this discussions again, against whatever they feel ‘troublesome’. Reminds of china, doesn’t it, and thats where its heading and would have nailed your coffin if SOPA went through)
What about ACTA guys
adds the acronym to my ever growing list of unprofessional congress acronyms
