Space Safari - Retro-Inspired 2.5D Vehicular Action Platformer

Hello Everyone,

We’re currently working on our first game, Space Safari, which is currently being made with the free version of Unity. Space Safari is a 2.5D action adventure platformer created with the tradition of classic platformers such as Mega Man and Metroid in mind. It will feature six unique levels with alternate paths and upgrades for lots of re-playability. Players will spend the entire game driving around in the ATKV-1 (All Terrain Kill Vehicle) exploring the planet Volotor and attacking enemies with all sorts of weaponry.

Level design, though linear, branches off at multiple points leading to alternate paths. Some of these paths run nearly the entire length of the level and may feature different enemies and challenges. Players will also be able to revisit completed levels with all of their unlocked upgrades intact to search out more hidden paths and secret collectibles. Each level ends with a unique boss to fight.

Game Features

  • Classic 2.5D shoot ‘em up action with platforming puzzles
  • Explore the massive planet Volotor with countless enemies to defeat
  • Become more powerful with various upgrades and power-ups
  • Overpower previous levels by revisiting them with all your upgrades intact
  • Approximately 4 - 6 hours of gameplay
  • Battle a unique boss at the end of each level
  • Explore hidden paths with collectibles to find
  • Steamworks integration including achievements, leaderboards, cloud saves, etc…
  • Gamepad support for popular controllers

Feedback/Suggestions

As we are still early in development, we are looking for feedback and suggestions to help improve the quality of Space Safari. On our Steam Greenlight page, we’ve been getting mostly positive comments, yet we’ve been getting more no votes than yes votes. So we’re not sure what people don’t like about Space Safari. Your feedback and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

As an example of how important your feedback and suggestions are, below are two screenshots of before and after our graphical and lighting improvements based on user feedback:

We will updating this thread with more information as we progress further with the development of Space Safari.

Cool concept and execution CF. There are several visual improvements I’m sure your aware of so I’m not going to comment on the little stuff. The one thing that stood out was the lack of body “physics” on the vehicle. It looks like this was done intentional for a good reason but couldn’t you keep the same accuracy and add in some slight body rocking/ secondary body movement?

I think I will save this to play with my boy. I think he will enjoy it. Nice work!

Hello theANMATOR2b, and thanks for your comments. We originally tried to have the vehicle able to go on inclines, but it turned out to be a major problem with this type of game because the vehicle could easily flip over, especially when partially over a ledge. So we decided to lock the rotation of the vehicle so that it can’t rotate and plays more like a classic platformer.

Adding some slight body movement may be possible. We will have to see if we can add that as we progress further with development. As this is our first game, it is still a learning process for us, especially when dealing with physics.
