Space Yard

Hello Fellow Unity Peoples!

I’m looking for some feedback on the graphical style and the 3D models used in this little space demo.

http://www.differentmethods.com/dropbox/spaceyard/

I’ve received conflicting feedback on the style, look and quality of these models. What are your thoughts?

Also, I’ve noticed the above web player will stop responding to user input after a few seconds, but can be resolved by going to full screen mode. If this happens to you, please let me know so I can submit a bug report.

Thanks!

The ships look pretty cool and the first time I saw an explosion.

But the large ship (above yellow bay) has some z fighting, or something going on with the tex, looks like z fighting. So does the smaller one above it.

I like the shapes and style though.

I like the shapes of the ships, but like Jay_Adams said you should look into the textures again. But it looks great, what is the game going to be about?

There is no game yet, I’m experimenting to see how good I can get vertex coloured only models to look. There are no textures on these ships

Very nice designs, but still need a bit of work to make them look good.

Another problem is general LOD problems lots of visual problems such as shadows etc. having very jagged edges.

Will watch with interest.

just curious, but what was the reason you decided to do an outlined style?

Why the outline style? Basically the time and budget needed to produce high quality textures, normal and spec maps is beyond what I want to do with this little project. Choosing a retro/toon style means I can get further with a smaller budget.

Looks pretty nice. The splitscreen is a little bit irritating (or is it just me?). But the smothness of movements and design of models is pretty cool.

Have you been updating the web-player… or am I going crazy?

:- Yes, I’ve made some changes and have kept updating the player, based on private feedback. Has it become better or worse?

Much better. Much much better. This looks extremely promising.

I like the style. However, it jitters a lot when I move around.

I noticed there was “insides” to some of the ships, and that the flipped normals are otherwise painted black. Are you using doule-sided faces?. If I’m not mistaken, that plus the toon outline means you have 4x the number of polygons you should have for each spaceship…

Also, what’s with everyone and space-themed games lately? We seem to be starting a trend or something!

The internal faces are an artifact of the toon shader, which turns the model inside out, scales it up a little then renders it black.

I’ve update the web player. Im using a different material system now, and baking ambient occlusion into the vertex colours, and mixing it with the materials via a customised shader.

Also added a few more spaceships.

Looking very nice!

Awesome! Also, the stuttering is gone.

link wont work with safari, but firefox does.

Not too bad a start, I like the style!

Thanks! I’ve just added some starship troopers style drop ships. While about 4m high, they are still a little hard to find in the scene.

I guess I should start thinking about using these in a game of some description!

i like the stye mate and the textures will work fine if you get some smoothing groups on the cylinders you use for the gun barrels and stuff, get them to look clean like the rest of the ships and add a cockpit that follows the same clean solid colors style, and it should look pretty sweet. loads really fast, and the game play looks to be interesting, i especially liked all the negative space in the large ships, being able to fly through them does a great deal for interpretation of scale and also its just dam kool, good work mate!
