What is up with the new sales spam that is hitting the forum and not getting cleaned out? If it was real compaines, they wouldn’t be wholeselling with a “yahoo” account and no website to go buy products, and they are posting that junk in what seems random area’s, like the wishlist and networking so far, first is the iPhone junk now the hardware junk.
I thought those would have been killed the moment they were found by the forum mods. I hate sales spam, very trashy crap just sitting around filling forum space.
I’m sure UT doesn’t like it either, considering the spammers are advertising for free on the forums. I PM the mods when I see stuff like that just in case they haven’t seen it yet.
good point Alvarus…It’s hard for the mods to spot all the spam…Higgy suggested to me that if I spot any just give him a nudge …I would suggest any members who spot potential spam do likewise…
We can ban user names, we can block IP numbers, none of that stops the world of spam-bots and other dirt bags that want to pollute ours and many other forums. We’re working on some changes on our end to hopefully reduce the volume, but until then if you see any spam please (a) do not reply in the thread in question and (b) ping a moderator with a link to the spam thread/post so we can handle business.
It’s one of the down-sides to an increase in popularity, like moths to the light the spammers will flock to our forums due to the high traffic and visibility. 'Tis the cost of popularity!
and I don’t thnk that we should lock down the forum to people who have bought unity. I mean how can you tell? there are users here who have and some have not I mean it would be a pain to convert it with so many people here.
Folks, we’re working on other solutions like have been suggested above as part of my statement that “We’re working on some changes on our end to hopefully reduce the volume”. So sit tight and hang in there, we not in need of suggestions on how to deal with this for now so much as we’re in need of folks simply reporting spam to a moderator. Tools and spam-reduction efforts are on the way!
As you are keenly aware, I’ve been faithfully reporting spammers as they pop up. One thing came to mind this morning though, is there some way to add a link on the forum page to report a post to the moderators? The problem is (and it’s a minor inconvenience admittedly) is that each time I find a spammer post I have to first track down the right person to notify’s email address, then I have to copy and paste the thread’s web address into a new email. If there were a link or button at the bottom of each post to report to the moderator, then people might be more inclined to just click the link rather than post a reply.

No, not yet. Again, this is something that’s a part of our coming upgrade plans that I’ve referenced above. So yes, this sort of thing is something we’re looking at adding in the “near” term (it’s been “near” for a while now but I actually think it’s really near now! ).
