Sports simulator field texturing


I am currently busy developing a very basic rugby simulator in Unity.

What would a good way to texture the field with it’s different zones since a single texture seems to not render well?

The field is 144M x 72M - using a diffuse map of 4096 x 2048 still seems to stretch (grass and lines not displaying properly).

Would it be better to break the field down into its different zones and texture each individually?


rather best way to cover such large area with a good-looking textures is:

  • cover a plane (field) with a tile texture of grass, possible with a second detail texture and bump map for best result
  • create a field lines model as mesh (can be even programmable generating) and map them for line texture with soft edges
  • place second mesh a little on top of field
