Square One - A time travel game with a twist!

Hi guys, I have been working on this game on and off for a couple of months in between other jobs. I thought it would be a good time to start a thread for it, so here it is!

“Not many make it as far as you have, your reasons must be strong”

Square One is a unique game about time travel, as the player you will take control of a game character that has been sent back though time. However, time is different in the gaming world. Rather than battling through the Ice Age or Victorian times; each level will represent a different era of gaming.

“You are from a different time; a time where characters roam 3d worlds. Now you are an empty shell, stripped of your 3d existence, not even a physical body to contain your mind.”

From the beginning the game character (no name yet!) really is sent back to Square One, they will have no idea who they are or why they have been sent back in time. You will have to build your character from nothing, choosing their appearance, weapons and abilities by collecting items in level one – the text based era. From here you will progress to simple 2d, various side-scrollers and more; right through to the 3d era we know today.

As you progress through the game it will become apparent that the character has been sent back for a reason. The game world may never be the same if you cannot complete your mission and defeat the evil that will inevitably cross your path.

“It is time for you to find your reason and start your journey to the world you once knew. Your former self no longer exists, it is up to you to carve your path back through the ages and discover your motive for travelling here.”

The gameplay will vary from level to level; there will be many enemies to battle, and many ways to battle them. These include four different weapons, four abilities and two accessories. All of these items can only be collected in the first level and only one of each can be taken through the game past level two.

Two abilities that will have a bigger impact on the game are time-related. They will allow the player to either upgrade to a future version of themselves, or downgrade all enemies in the level to their version in the last level. In later levels this will cause a crossover between 2d, 3d and different perspectives, creating unique visuals and challenging gameplay. Weapons available will include a gun, a sword, a throwing knife and fireballs.

Here are some of the characters from level three firing their weapons, the three clothing options are a Suit, Armour, and a Superhero costume.

Hi all, I have just updated the blog! There’s some more information on level 2 and some pictures of the enemy progression from level 2 to level 3!

I had a good day yesterday and sorted out the different enemy states in level 3, am enjoying working with sprites as I haven’t done too much of it before, still can’t wait to get onto later levels and get some 3d content in there though!
