when i start a new project in unity i select the standard assets and they install in the project but ive heard there are other things inside the folder other than character controllers which is all i get i have tried reinstalling unity to solve this but i just keep getting the same problem, can anyone help me?

2I don't fully understand your question.
If you want to install the other standard asset packages, you can goto the menu Assets/Import Package and it should list all available packages.
By default there are about 14 packages you can select to add to a new project. The character controller package comes first, are you not only selecting that? Make sure you select the other packages too.
Also bear in mind there is a standard assets (mobile) package which is only for mobile platforms.
