Hi there is a bit of work I’ve just done for Magnetar Games (http://www.magnetargames.com). Might be interesting for somebody for a few of its custom solutions:
- starfield rendered using custom particle shader system (static, but handles stars exact data / color ) from star database delivered (about 45000 stars)
- star zoom with set of custom shaders (star surface/corona built on top of Turbulence Library perlin noise)
- star navigation (labeling, used Vectrosity for vector stuff)
Of course star sizes are put in arbitrary scale, because even hygergiants would constitute subpixels comparing to distance between different stars (use star absolute magnitude compression slider to even star size or see which one are really small and which are quite big / luminous).
