I’ve been wondering this for a while. How can I start Unity when I have messed up a project so bad that it crashes Unity every time I open it? I usually have to restart my computer and then rename the project to get it to open. I have to restart because I keep getting an error saying the project folder is in use, even though there is nothing I can find using it.
Think this answers your question:

On windows you need to hold alt when Unity is starting.
Neither of those worked for me. Holding down Alt only opens the properties and holding down control doesn’t seem to have any effect. Maybe I am doing it wrong? I am holding down the key and then double clicking on the icon. I tried it on the shortcut as well as the actual application in the Program Files. I even tried it on the start menu but pressing the alt key closes it.
Start unity and them hold alt. Or go into unity properties and tell it to always display the project selection at start. Google unlocker. It’s a tool for unlocking folders. Very useful.

Got it. Thanks!
