Static Batching performance issues on MacOS

On an Imac11 with an ATI HD 5750, enabling static batching destroys performance ( by over an order of magnitude).
Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on?
The CPU hit gets really high as well as the GPU time reported in the stats windows.

There’s a bug with some ATI Mac drivers where something over 25K or so vertices (or maybe tris) in a single mesh kills performance. I think this is being addressed in the next version of Unity.
