Step-by-step guide for uprading the Firebase SDK

I would like to upgrade the Firebase SDK in my project from 8.2.0 to 8.8.0. I remember that last time I did an upgrade, it was a big pain that involved a lot of fiddling around to get it working again.

I’d be grateful if someone could share (or point me to) a good step-by-step guide.

(The only things that I could find were this and this forum post, both of which are somewhat vague in their instructions and resulting in a broken project when i tried them.)
