Strange texture problem

I have a bumped wood texture.
As you can see in the pic below, the texture looks good.

But then, sometimes the same exact texture looks horrible:

The midtones become ‘grey’ and it looks like an Alpha issue.
I don’t have ‘Alpha from Greyscale’ enabled.
This seems to be an issue at certain angles relative to light.

What can I do to make the texture look good from all angles ?

Wanted to ask the same question :slight_smile: Further thoughts: whats your bump map for this? Maybe the b/w image is vice versa? (high - bright, low - dark) Your shader looks like bumped specular, which I wouldn’t prefer for wood, since its not metalic. Execept you want some polished look :slight_smile:
