Substance painter 2 vs Substance Painter 1.

If anyone here used Substance painter 1 and then upgraded to Paitner 2, I’d be very interested to hear if the upgrade was worth the money … or if there were significant improvements in version 2.

During the 1.x cycle I think they’ve added quite a few useful features that weren’t in the 1.0 release. I’ve bought the v2 upgrade in the transition period where they sold it at a discount and I’m counting on them adding more cool features during the 2.x release cycle. I haven’t really used version 2 yet, so I couldn’t give you any better feature comparison than their website. I’d say it depends mostly on how you use the thing whether or not the upgrade is worth it to you.
Anyway, since the thread is over 2 weeks old, how did you decide?

Slightly related Question: I’ve used Bitmap2Material a bit recently and I learned here that you can export presets and generated texture maps from within Unity. But it proved to me to be highly unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes it has a massive delay. Did anybody experience or even solve this?
If someone has similar experiences/solutions for advanced Substances in .sbsar format that might be also applicable, since B2M was made in Substance Designer and is integrated into Unity as an .sbsar file.

I use the in-Unity B2M constantly, mostly to turn old textures into PBR textures, and it works pretty well, though I stick to a specific workflow now of making the preset and then doing “Export Bitmaps” (click the little gear next to the name in the inspector) to export to a folder, and then using those textures in a regular non-substance material. The other methods of using it (putting the substance itself onto something directly as a material, or using a material with links to the substance procedural textures) have been either buggy or too slow.

I see. I haven’t used it that much so far, but I also didn’t have the impression it’s 100% stable. The issue I’m having now though, is that the export you describe as a workaround is too buggy to be usable for me x]. Seriously, I’ve had a case where I’ve clicked the export bitmap function 4 times in a row and nothing happened. Any idea what could cause that? Just moments before it had worked just fine, so I don’t think I’m doing something wrong.

Hmm, I’ve never had any problems with the actual export, but often the files don’t show up in the hierarchy after you do it; you need to right-click the folder they’re in and choose “Refresh” for the textures to actually show up in Unity.

Ohhhh, that could be it! I’ll test it tomorrow. Thank you very much!
