Sugestion : Unity forum "Like" button

I would like to suggest a new feature for the unity forums, what about we add an option to “like” posts? This way we wouldn’t have to reply to some posts saying like " good job man , I like it! " , and still the person who posted would get some feedback, anyone agrees/disagrees with me? Perheaps even a Like/Dislike button.

I dislike this idea.

Have you heard of Unity Feedback? It is pretty much what you’re asking. You request features and people can vote on them. Everybody has 10 votes to use, and you can give each suggestion up to 3 votes. In that blue bar at the top of the page click “Feedback” and you’ll find it.

Cool, didn’t knew about that, Thanks!

I don’t think that’s what he was asking for.

EDIT: I think you mean for him to go to Feedback, not that his suggestion is similar to Feedback.

We’re looking at ways to get the voting and karma system we use on Answers into the forum. That’s not as easy as it sounds, given the size of the database behind the forum. We do want regular, consistent, helpful users to be rewarded for their help on this site.

This sounds good, even better then what I was thinking, it would be nice to get some rewards for helping others.

I misread the OP as him wanting likes and dislikes on feature requests, not that likes and dislikes are the requested feature.

yeah , the Idea is to like a reply , for example, I show some nice work, and instead you post saying " nice work " , you just hit a “like” button, and the post get’s a “point” for example, it’s a nice way to get feedback , and not having to reply.

We are always looking to add new things to the forums for better usability. I love to add features like this but what we have is quite limited, however we are looking at other software to run the forums on so that we can make changes quicker and without a lot of effort from the web developers.

I don’t like this idea. Voting systems skew discussions (ala reddit) right now we have the “every post is equal” and I think that benefits a forum much more than say Unity Answers where you can give a simple technical solution.

This is true, but what if you could switch views, even customise what forums or even topics or tags you could see like super preferences. A girl can dream

I agree with this. Unity answers has voting on concrete answers to questions. It’s a bit more difficult for this to work when the discussions are as subjective and abstract as they are on the forums

A “Dislike” button allows you to disregard an opinion without explaining why, and that leads no where.

I could say “Unity is very user friendly”. Someone may disagree for something silly, maybe he or she is not be aware of Unity’s great documentation and find it hard to use, if he or she simply dislikes my comment, it would be suggesting I’m wrong without explaining why, and that’s counter-productive. If anyone disagrees with an opinion, an explanation is required, so people can agree with you, or correct you (with the following argumentation)… this is all done by talking and replying, no dislike buttons are required.

Although a “Like” button might be good to focus people’s attention on well written/truthful posts, so no one misses the good stuff!

My 2 cents

Tags - Would be most welcome and most useful
Like Button - No opinion on this
Dislike Button - Bad idea. Nothing wrong with being a critic. Like the earlier posts have said, it would be better when someone disagrees with a post, he/she explains why instead of a poorly communicative ‘Dislike’ with no explanation. That would be poor form

As long as you only give recognition to people that were real helpful and no real powers over the other people in the forum, then is OK.

I’ve been on this forums since 2007 and never had an interest to increase my post counts. I do have a real life and getting involved in every topic in this forum (especially in Gossip) is not my idea of contributing. Not to mention if a kiddo with free version is going to censor or close my posts (just because he has enormous time to spend in the forum), I am going to be very very upset.

I dont see any problem with a like button. I assume that is intended to be like facebook likes.

Its not like it affects anything.

And also that way you wouldn’t need to just post “+1”

+1

It’s nice when you have a question and someone gives a good answer. Sometimes it’s not worth replying to but you want to acknowledge you saw it to the poster by liking it. Shouldn’t have any effect other than that, no sorting by likes or anything simply an ability to give feedback to others without replying/bumping the thread.
