it seems like beginner questions don’t get as much attention as those who are already familiar with the product (just look at those with zero responses for long periods of time)…
maybe if there was a Forum area dedicated to Beginners this would help!
i’m trying to get started… and i’m good at learning things by myself…
but i can find no Unity tutorials or Unity sample projects to look at… trying to figure Unity out by going through manuals is very tough… especially with no sample project to manipulate!
i’m pretty sure these things exist… when i first execute Unity a pop-up comes up with th top line saying ‘Video Tutorial’… but when clicked on it goes to the Manuals page with no videos or tutorials! How about someone providing the direct link to the ‘Video Tutorial’ page?
i would be willing to learn from a book… what would be a good book to get (hopefully one with example projects and tutorials)? i see a lot of books on Unity 3… but since i’m a beginner i don’t know the differences between ver. 3 and ver 4…
anyone want to point to the way to get started once one has the application downloaded… PLEASE!
PS - i’d also sign up for one of the free on-line classes, but they are all ‘Full’… and i want to start learning how to use Unity NOW…
This has been in discussion on the forums for a long time, and we are working on creating a “Getting Started” forum where you can find everything to do with the community site and learning Unity as well as ask questions.
Books for version 3 will not include a lot of the new features we have in 4 and unfortunately the online classes are super popular and fill up really fast. We are also aware that the pop up box in the editor doesn’t link to the right areas anymore and we are in the process of revamping it.
You know. Y’all should add a form so we can sign up for the online class in a Que… Like waiting list. Who has the time to check that page every single day in the hopes that there might be an opening.
I am quite tired of companies releasing products early to get the “up sale”, but not being prepared in the form of information… Where has the day gone where companies actually provided good amounts of information WHEN the product is released not years later? I am sure I remember it used to be that way… I guess those days of good service are gone for good?
I will suggest that to the training guys, they ar still working on improving sign ups and the way it all works. The reason we did not release the latest Learn site before 4.0 was launched is because it has taken a long time to develop this platform, it’s not just your average video tutorials coming your way. Additionally all the tutorials would instantly be out of date if developed before 4.0 was released as the development builds of Unity change on a daily basis.
Video Tutorials, Getting Started areas, enhanced documentation and such are quite useful, no question. Actually since there are so many people around trying to learn Unity I agree that this is a must-have. But I see you guys are working on that which is a great thing!
However I personally am against a “newbie” forum where the “easy” or basic questions should go to. For a simple reason: It’s hard to draw a line and see what actually is a basic question and what not. Even for advanced users it might be very helpful to sometimes get a refreshment on their mind (talking of myself here ;)) and even in the basic questions solutions could rise and be stated which are far more than basic.
Users should not need to cope with the question what the right board for their call for help would be apart from separating basic Unity questions, scripting questions or platform related questions. And IF there is such a forum, I am really sure that the board ninjas and sheriffs will also arise and we’ll see many posts like “that should have gone to the newbie section!”. Which I consider unnecessary.
I guess that not getting answers might simply be caused by the amount of posts and threads started. Sometimes it does only take a few hours until posts previously on page 1 get pushed away by other posts. Plus also advanced topics get no answers from time to time.
So, the TL;DR version: No need for special boards for new arrivals’ questions, but indeed a need for advanced documentation.
