Hi,
So, I’ve been stuck on Microsoft products for a long time and will get my new Macbook Pro tomorrow. I’ve been doing network engineering infrastructure for way too long and needed windows (it made life easier, believe it or not). So now that I quit that side of the industry, I’m going back to software development and have no reason to “need” a pc anymore.
That being said, I’ve had a 17" powerbook pro close to 7 years ago (while i could), so I am not new to the OS X, I know *nix bsd, etc. I know the hardware/software I’m buying.
What I don’t know is “must have” software for the mac side. I’ve already downloaded what I call the “necessities” - which are:
Google Chrome
Gimp
VLC
Eclipse
XCode (ill grab from the store)
Android support files for development
Blender
Dropbox
RarOSX 4.1.1 (anything better?)
MacVim (again, anything better?)
RDC
Skype
Transmission (seems good?)
VNC
Unity (duh)
Cyberduck
Colloquy
(UnRarX - in case the other one fails at life)
… what am I missing?
I’m sure I missed a couple I already have, but I’d like suggestions (on a professional level) of what you would recommend and why.
Meh, not really important, in my opinion. I came to the conclusion recently that Apple doesn’t actually have a competitor. Other companies offer competing products, but nobody offers a singular experience spread across as many classes of devices as they do. You’ll be better off getting iOS devices even if you use Android too. Woz does that.
Yeah, I love the ease of hardware likeness that apple offers, but I loathe iTunes (but if it makes me money it’s my friend). I still need to get an iPad iPhone (just trying to decide which model to base iphone testing off first, the tab ill get the newest).
Codecs, knew I forgot something.
That 3D mouse, do you have it? How’s it function? Worth the money? I would not use the lcd, shortcuts to apps, and junk. I’d use the view buttons and stick mainly. I’m a shortcut person, so extra buttons of little use are not wanted (more stuff to clutter my desktop and break).
Still going through the list…
Oh, I saw you linked unarchive and the 7z one, I picked the 2 on my list as options because of multi-file support and all the basic options i needed. I’'ll put the CLI version of rarlabs rar in for anything i need that’s out of the ordinary. I also used Toast and own a version, but I never burn anything anymore, so what’s the point of worrying about something I don’t use.
I’ve got three SpaceNavigators! You can find me singing its praises here and on the modo forum, since 2007. I’m switching from Blender to modo as soon as they iron out the SpaceNavigator issues. Working in 3D without it is a pain, and that includes Unity.
We’re on exactly the same page. The ones with the screens are overpriced nonsense. As with my Wacom tablets, I don’t even use the buttons on it.
