I don’t know why but I’ve always disliked that art style ever since I first saw it becoming so popular in Mobile games. Can you / will you be showing the same kind of 15 minute creation process using pixel art?

Just make the Illustrator exported image tiny, export to Photoshop and resize to larger…maybe 4X to get the pixels.

I think it became popular because it’s fast to create. Pixelart and especially detailed pixelart isn’t that fast to create, it can take days. Especially when we’re talking about animated objects such as characters and enemies.

That’s not the proper way to make pixelart. It may work and it may fool some, but it isn’t a proper way to do this and WILL be caught on by gamers looking for actual pixelart. Similarily, Spriter and so on isn’t proper way to make pixelart animations.

YOU may not be able to do it… Gar Benjamin may not be able to do it. I can kick both your butts around the block and back in art techniques in all mediums. It is what I have been doing for hours daily for 53 years… I have been using PS and Illustrator since the early 90’s and make pixel art for the very first phone games in 2002. Iy would take me a few minutes to do a ghost or palm tree, a sailing ship a few minutes longer…Frankly it is so low on the totem pole of my art abilities and so simple to do it would bore me to tears. LOL … Proper…heh…what a load of horse molarkey. If it looks like it is it is.

Problem is, it won’t look like it is to a trained eye of actual pixel artist and not some wannabe. And once other he tells other people about it, with proof showing that is just a resized hires image, people will pan the game. Get GraphicsGale (or other proper PA program), visit Pixeljoint and learn how to do it properly.

PixelJoint and Pixelation are awesome. Lot of very talented folks there who really love pixel art. A few artists I work with came from there.

But we really shouldn’t derail the OP’s thread. I was just asking them if they planned on doing any pixel work. Then it kind of blew up from that. lol

Gimme a break pal. Yer talkin’ outta yer hat just to hear yourself blither. Prove to me you have anything near a trained eye and I will post links to my multiple portfolios in all mediums to prove I do have a trained eye. I was originally trained in Renaissance and Baroque oil painting, was an acknowledged child prodigy by age seven, have produced one of the largest sculptures in America that will be a landmark for at least the next century if not 500 years+, hold a record for the largest art install at the 96 Olympics and was handpicked by the VP of Coca Cola over 2000 other artists including the famous Peter Max for that, have entered the collections of Ron Paul, Yoko Ono and Michael Jackson, designed tour productions for Michael Jackson, did leather costume design and construction for Bowie’s Glass Spiders tour and produced well over 200,000 unique digital images and performed for over 3000 freelance art jobs in my career, as well as tattooed over 350 bodies… What have you done to contribute to the art world that makes you the expert on anything art related? Some frikkin computer virus game you have been working on forever whilst I created at least a dozen games in the same timeframe? Sorry pal but you were lookin’ to be BTFO>

I’m the pope.

You implying I am lying junior? You from reddit or tumblr or just another one of these regressive pipsqueaks pretending to be a game dev? I eat trolls for breakfast. Google my name pipsqueak. Randy Blain.

edit after looking at your work…

Just looked at your horror game. I nailed you on the money junior. Don’t mess with pros. I am liable to give you a proper review of your “horror” game…

I will be around for just a bit. I actually work for a living and will be narrowing game dev down to Global Wheels folks and a few of my games…if Unity fixes the damned terrain and SpeedTree system,… Just reinvested in a full set of tattoo equipment and will be returning to oil painting. I am sick and tired of the game industry, it’s bloated ego’s, the plethora of regressive leftists haunting it’s halls and it’s money grubbing tactics along with freelance clients that rip hard work off. I will make more money doing tattoos and oil paintings and not have to endure 14/7 dev cycles and it’s ridiculous artificial deadlines and Unity’s glaring flaws and bugs making me bash my head into the walls.

This thread would have stuck to the topic had not the typical know it all experts chimed in with passive aggressive troll baiting.

True - however if the game is fun - nobody except for fanatics (minority) care much.
Same deal - Playmaker isn’t “truely” the proper way to code - but if the game is fun, enjoyable and functions correctly - nobody except coders (minority) really care.
The technique is good for prototyping at the very least - getting quick art done in a jiffy, though I prefer to just scratch rough stuff together in photoshop and shoot it on to Unity.

@markoradunovic thanks for making the video graphics lesson. Sorry I led us astray bringing up pixel art. If you make a new thread I will stay away to make sure I don’t throw it off track.

True…and he can’t even read instructions. The technique I described was not downsizing hirez but upsizing small vector grfx. You may need an eyedropper and then select by color and fill a few areas to get it just right, or run it through a posterizer filter with the filter set to 2 or three colors but there is no need for specialized apps for this if you have PS and Illustrator. Still nothing more than a few minutes to a skilled digital artist with an eye who knows their toolset.

Gosh, and I’ve thought Steve Jobs had an ego seven times bigger than the universe.

You asked for it pal. You are always on here spouting off and criticizing. You ran into a brick wall with me and I can back it all up. Finish your game and then come back with some bragging rights. Until then you can STFU. I could give a hoot nor a holler what someone thinks of me when they are of your caliber. People with actual accomplishments to back them up know where I am coming from. Now…back to the art thing and your snotty ass. What you got to back up your blithering and prove you have an eye? The OP is at least contributing. You can’t even read simple directions.

You could never build this. 83 tons, 65 foot tall, 10.5 tons of pure copper in 2700 scales and over 3000 pieces of handcut copper. Bent and pounded the scales and head substructure by hand. Took me six months. Can withstand 175 mph winds and an 8.5 earthquake, been on over 200 magazine covers including Japan Airlines in flight magazine as what to see when visiting America, national and local news interviewed me, kudos sent to me by top athletes, movie and music stars. You have been working on your game at least twice that long and you brag about that. In ratio yours is the overblown ego junior. Consider yourself BTFO again.
