Super Space Salvage Marines [Squad Based RTS/RPS]

Edit:
Super Space Salvage Marines is a space squad shooter where a team of gunslingers clear out abandoned space ships of squatters to collect salvage. They then spend all their credits at the space station partying and having a good time!

The basic idea of the game is it is a real-time spaceship exploration game, with RPG elements included.

I’m a first year programming student and I’m trying to swing this one on my own, I might look for an artist or two down the road. I’m going to submit this to a videogame contest in a month and hopefully it places in the top ten.

The biggest comment from play testers at the moment is they want a different gun sound, I’ve replaced the gun SFX 3 times already. I’m trying to hunt down that rat-a-tat assault rifle sound.

Hey All,
I’ve haven’t gone away. I’ve been working on my game Super Space Salvage Marines!
I’m surprised I got no here responses yet. I thought I had a cool idea!
I’ve removed the demo because it doesn’t reflect where we’re at right now. I’ve optimized the whole game, reducing draw calls, only to up them again when I began working on customization of player characters. Thats how it goes.
We’ve fixed the glitchy doors from the alpha, they would close in the player’s face. Now they open and stay until the player leaves.
We’ve added inventory items to collect! Their functionality still needs work.
Characters can now find health kits and other potions in the game!
There is a new droid class and alien race, at last we’re not fighting space demons and space ice elementals! I’m so glad I didn’t have to add giant space frogs as an enemy.
We’ve fixed the voice overs.
And there is path finding, which needs some work on the stairs.
We’re working towards a demo towards the end of the week to apply for a 1.5K grant. It ain’t much but it helps!
Then we’re submitting it to a contest. Hopefully Super Space Salvage Marines will look sexy by the end of July!

I think there is a lack of responses because there is no picture, even that I see the “attached images” text, nothing shows up. Also a youtube link showing the gameplay would be even better.

Really? It shows up on mine, I’ll shrink the pics them by 50% for the web, this forum seems to like gifs jpegs over pngs…
Thanks for the heads up…
Okay I’ve posted the pics as jpgs, can people see them now?

All I see is two pics in your first post, but they look very good! How about using the assault gun SFX from the movie Aliens?

Thank you for your compliments.

While I love that awesome sound effect, I do not think I would be able to legally use the sound effect in my “commercial” project. I’m not sure if I can even use it as a placeholder sound as my alphas might be considered an unauthorized use of the sound for a “trailer” such as a demo. I would like to stay out of legal troubles. Most of the sounds I’m using are attribution and open source.

Unfortunately it looks like we’re not going to be getting a grant from my local government next month. A few of the grant’s administrators seemed to have a bias against any sort of software/software services company as a summer business. Though one of the administrators was supportive of a mobile software company, he was not supportive of a PC/Web software. He thought in his words “this game will never finished before august”, and “you don’t need this funding as you could get it from kickstarter”. Kickstarter is competitive, and now people create polished prototypes and hire advertising firms to create videos before going on there there to ask for money. I think that it would do better on kickstarter if there were some sort of budget for quality graphics sound effects, voice overs, music and advertising. They don’t seem to understand the game industry; pre-order sales/advertising, software as a service, itertitive design… To save space, I’ll continue this in my blog later.

We’re definitely going to submit this prototype to various video game contests, there is one coming up in June, and one coming up in October, I’m looking for more contests that a game like this is eligible for, if you know any, please let me know.

We’ve added several new features in the past week including:
Inventory System Upgrades:
-Stackable Items

  • Drag and Drop
  • Can Drop from Inventory Gui to World
  • Consumables Working
  • Resolution Independent

-Splash Damage
-Destructible Items
-Explosive Barrels Marked Prominently with Red Paint,
-Complete with SFX and Particle Effects{Burning, Exploding}
-Also Chain Reaction Explosions Working on a delay
-Improved Unit AI (Sometimes the player units would act as if they were player controlled)
-Improved Contextual Cursor (Player would previously be giving their heroes orders through the GUI and Scrolling Interfered with the Inventory)

This week we’re going to try to get a new playable level working to showcase the updates.
We’re also going to add a special power to each unit.
We’re going try to implement some more interesting particle effects to attacks.
If there is time: A bare bones character creation screen.
