Surrender : First Playable

Hi guys, I’ve been working all day and night for the last 5 weeks and my game is finally in a playable state. So I’ve decided to share a build of the game in its current state.

It’s not 100% finished but 1 level of the full game is included in this first playable.

Please play and any comments are gratefully received

amazing stuff so far!

Its really late and i’m retiring for the night but i wanted to give it a quick test run with the artillery cannon. The vehicle physics feel polished quite polished. The destruction as well as the ammo collision feels just right. This is one project you have going that is well worth the finish. Strangely what i admire most about you work is the HUD. It seems informative enough and the transparencies are very subtle. Not sure if its your final but i liked it. Performance appeared steady (on my laptop). The graphics artistically blend well with one another.

Like I said i didn’t play much but I will tomorrow. But this is my few minute impression. Really impressive job!

Pretty good game, like it so far. Also enjoyed the level design video

This is fun!

Runs smooth on iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3, OSX 10.6.6 (middle quality ~29 FPS / high quality ~20 FPS)

Rather than comment on your site I’ll leave my thoughts here.

I thought the best part of your game was the buggy driving in the beginning. The controls were tight, the physics were good and the graphics looked great. The potential for a great game was there. When the game itself started and I saw that it was a carbon copy of Return Fire I was dissapoint.

Return Fire’s gameplay is so outdated that with just a graphical upgrade I find it unplayable today. I’m not sure what is on your todo list, but I feel the formula would require some big changes to be considered good or great today.

The best thing (or only good thing about Return Fire) was split screen 2-player versus, but even that I doubt I would enjoy much today as games, even simple ones, have evolved so much.

The controls are not good imho. Use the friggin mouse. Also the fact that the terrain is not flat like in the original game leads to some extremely frustrating moments with rockets just exploding in front of your face instead of hitting the enemy. With the locked camera you constantly have to shoot and things at the edge of the screen or even outside it. This is frustrating.

Examples of things I would add include:

  • More diversity to the vehicles. Right now I don’t see a difference between the tank and the missile launcher
  • More things to do. The ability to place turrets, upgrade vehicles etc.
  • Mouse control for crying out loud :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m with Twiik on this one… since the explosion in popularity of twin stick shooter controls in games like Assault Heroes on xbox 360 and alien swarm on PC, these old school steering/only shoot in the direction you’re facing controls (reminds me of infantry online, actually) feel clumsy, awkward, and woefully inadequate.

I think if you made it where the player always faced the mouse cursor, it would be infinitely more playable, and probably one of the best Unity games I’ve seen. (Also, if you added multiplayer I think it would almost be like an Infantry Online redux, which would be amazing and is something I’ve thought of doing myself!)

Graphics are very smooth and polished. The UI was very nice and the menus looked great. I hated the controls. Vehicles should only turn while moving forward. The weapons on the vehicles would be a turnable turret separate of the vehicle itself. I would have preferred to be able to use the mouse in some way, to aim or steer.

I understand you are going for a certain style of game. I don’t usually play this style game. Maybe fans of the genre would not find the controls unplayable. But newcomers, like me, do.

Really great job - This game has some serious potential!

It does need a bit of a control redesign. Like others, I would suggest a mouse point and click for aiming - I found it frustrating to aim at things. I would have played much longer if I could aim with a mouse.

Keep it up

Nice job ! Like the graphical style very much. As commented above, I would do some redesign of controls. (adding mouse look for aiming etc.)

This will up the gameplay value a lot, along with some gameplay elements like upgrading/building your base. Hope you find the time to keep improving and working on this, coz I see a good game coming out in the end.

I would have to agree with everyone else. The UI and art is really good but the keyboard controls need a lot of work. And just to nit-pick I think the character animations need a little more loving but I’m just being picky on that part. I also got stuck under the heli when I first jump in the then jump out.

i enjoyed driving the buggy much more than the actual game
graphics are great, but as everyone else says try to work on the controls

thanks very much for testing guys, I am rethinking controls again from scratch, because of my love for retro arcade coupled with the fact I develop on a laptop and am usually mouse less made me do this purely on keys. But I’ve thought it through and I can make this work with mouse aswell so thankyou to all!

Awesome… look forward to seeing it! I would guess that the market of gamers who only use a keyboard would be incredibly slim, hehe.

Technically (and visually) it ownz and rulez but I don’t like the game itself, at this moment… closed in view isn’t good IMHO.
