Terrain imports with harsh bumps

Hi all,

I’m importing terrain RAW heightmaps that are dotted with white pixel spots.

So far I’ve tried to run a Guassian blur on them in Photoshop before sending them to Unity, but the bumps are still pretty bad, as seen in the attached screenshot.

Do you know any ways with either a tool within Unity, Photoshop, or if you’re science savvy, GDAL, that I can use to smooth out my terrain?

Thanks!

Jared

I read something about removing spots in Photoshop. The method was basically duplicating a layer, then moving it horisontally for a distance which is average “spot size” in pixels (using Offset filter or something), and setting it to Darken. Then making another duplicate of a layer and repeating the same, but with vertical offset. The question is if it’s applicable to RAW files…

Hey - many thanks for your response!

I found how to do an offset for the size of the spots I want to blend together, but am lost of what you mean by “darken”. Did you mean this? http://www.bigstockphoto.com/blog/photoshop-adjustment-layer-mask-tutorial

Thanks!

Layer blending mode - change it From Normal to Darken

A Detailed Explanation of How Photoshop Blend Modes Work - Photoshop Blend Modes Explained | Photo Blog Stop Darken checks the brightness of the current layer’s pixels vs previous layers, and displays the only those portions of the current layer which are darker than its background.

I did the offset trick and blended the horizontally and vertically displaced layers by setting them to lower opacities above the Background original and merged them together - and it helped with the random small pixels.

I realized though that my main problems are large white holes that strick far above the terrain, as seen in the heightmap attached, and am now looking for a way to smooth those out with muting the rest of the features in my image. Maybe a way to reduce slope if it’s too high? A filter that does that?

Many thanks for your guidance so far.

Edit them out manually with Healing Brush or Patch tool? https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/retouching-repairing-images.html Or just get better source files
