Terrain Resolution Query (Resolved)

Hallo all, I’m pretty much completely new to all this so please forgive me if I seem like an idiot, but basically I’m trying to create a large terrain, whilst still maintaining a good density of polys so that very angular terrain or shoreline areas look smooth and organic. By fiddling with settings on the “Terrain → Set Resolution” menu I can either decrease the overall size of the terrain to get the polys how I like them, or I can increase the size but in doing so make everything look jagged and ugly. Is there a way of getting around this?

Something I tried in order to bypass the above problem was using multiple smaller terrains side by side, but I found it prohibitively difficult to make them look seamless as the textures and heights were all slightly off. If I can’t change a single terrain to work how I like, is there any way this sticking terrains together technique could be made to work?

Thanks guys!

Sounds like you’re just changing the size…you want to change the actual resolution. That’s also in the Set Resolution menu.

Aha, got it. Thanks Eric, and sorry for being a noob. I think I’d missed it the first time round as I was trying to work with heightmap resolutions over 4096x4096 which aren’t supported, so obviously making it more than that was having no effect.

Cheers!

4096x4096 is already massive (not only world space wise but also memory wise). if you didn’t miniscale it, thats enough to walk for hours before you are through with the char controller and somewhere realistic speed.

And if you scaled it totally down you would get a performance impact thats beyond acceptable …

Yes, just make your terrain smaller and scale down the objects on it to match.
You can bring your camera in close and have it appear like they are large objects still.
Players can still walk for hours and hours (if you set the FPC to a low walk speed) but it will be able to render more efficiently and will give you more processing room to render things in great detail.

Awesome, I’ve got it to a point where the framerate is still good, but it’s big enough and detailed enough to make me happy. Thanks for the help everyone!
