Testing Android

Hey guys,

I’m a third year Game Dev student in Athlone IT , Ireland. Love using Unity but can only afford the free version. I’m looking into making an Android Game. I know I have to buy Unity and then Android Licence. But I was wondering if I do make a game, that I can just put it on my phone to test and see how it works without the licence?

Thanks!

Mark.

No you can’t. But you can get a Unity3D Android Basic license, it’s only 400$ or 300 EUR. Android Pro is at least 3000$ or 2200 EUR

edit:
Well actually it’s half the truth. You can install the Unity3D Trial license, it’s valid for 30 days. But 30 days isn’t enough to develop an Android game.

Considering how much time you’d spend on developing your own game engine for android, 400$ is an amazing value .

For myself, I plan on using the android game I’m working on as a talking piece during interviews . I’f it helps me to land ONE job its already paid for itself

You can get an extension on that if you ask nicely.

Or install it on another machine. But ethics aside, $400 isn’t a big outlay. And then once you’re ready to upgrade, it costs the difference rather than spending 1500 on top.

Well, the difference between Android Basic and Android Pro (if Basic being your only license) is 2600$ ($3000-400) not 1100 ($1500-$400) ^^

You could also just go about developing your game using the free version, get the game mechanics down, design, etc. Once your game and code are solid you can get the 30 day trial and then make a build for Android and work out the kinks. The down side is if you’ve made any major design decisions or code usage that doesn’t work well on the hardware, you’ll have some changes to make. But still, it seems like you should be able to accomplish such as phase within 30 days. I’ve done just that for a proof of concept.

Idk, if I was the OP i’d do this .
Work on the game for 8 months, for each month set aside 50$ for the Android license .
Then during month 9, get the 30 day trial , if its worth your while, use that saved 400$ to buy an Android license .

Hmm, here in the States I’ve spent over 200$ on a single book for my classes , so 400$ to easily develop Android games for the indefinite future doesn’t see like that much .
