Testing student games on conoles

I teach Unity to UK college students. We would like to have them play the games they make on one of the big consoles. Getting a game published for all to play would be great but thats more than we need. Being able to play it locally would be enough to give the student the experience we are after.

Do any of the consoles offer a way to do something like this? Whats our best option?

Thanks!

This is really more of a question for the console makers. Check their indie dev forums for the latest ways to.

Honestly if you’re going to be working in Unity anyway, making console builds for your class is going to probably take about a HUNDRED times more effort than simply buying a joystick / joypad and building it for PC.

At a minimum you will need to become a registered developer for whatever target you choose, then possibly purchase dev hardware or otherwise unlock consumer hardware, they might limit you to only one particular console, etc. Once you do that you need to establish a relationship with Unity to get the license unlocked for that target, etc.

Not simple at all. Doable, but extremely more complicated with lots more ways it can go wrong than a PC with a gamepad.

Good luck.
