Texture from Solidworks

Hi all,

I am a total newbie to Unity but just got a HTC Vive then found Unity and it’s great

OK, I use Solidworks to create my 3D models I can apply a downloaded texture (material) and apply it but these are only general “tiled images” not custom textures, my next step was to apply a proper texture to make my part look more realistic. I started to read about creating textures and think I understand it’s just a flattened picture (jpg) but is it possible to render my part in PhotoView360 (Solidworks render package) then somehow export a flattened jpg from this? or have I got the whole thing confused

P.S. or is there a simple render package that I should use for this sort of thing that takes OBJ or STL or solidworks files and create the texture jog.

I think the missing element for you is UV coordinates.
Look up UV mapping and if solidworks supports this and if it can be exported.
If no - the model is going to need to be imported into a software that supports UV creation for the mesh so you can lay out the texture properly on the model.
Hope this points you in the proper direction - as I have never used solidworks.
