Texture Type will not change to Sprite (2D and UI)

I’ve been importing pngs (with alpha) for the longest time and have always been able to set the Texture Type to Sprite (2D and UI).

But since 2 days ago, unity has been refusing to change my pngs to Sprite (2D and UI), and texture type always remains at ‘default’ after clicking the ‘apply’ button.

I’ve tried importing different image formats, png, tiffs, psd, jpg, all give the same negative result.

Can anyone please help?

I’ve tried opening a new project and importing these very same pngs and they convert perfectly to Sprite (2D and UI). could there be anything in a project (like a script) that forces the texture types to be converted into default mode and prevents converting them into Sprite (2D and UI).
