Texturing a model imported from maya-2011

when ever i import a Maya binary file into unity the object appears as solid gray, So i thought i would just apply the Lambert UV file from the materials folder next to the model, but its just solid gray as well? what am i doing wrong?

I feel like a complete idiot 5 hours of searching trying to find an answer, and all i had to do was apply my png UV to the lambert in unity. Meh.
