Texturing software-what to use?

i need a simple program that is good for texturing buildings to put into the unity editor - but not anything fancy as blender or 3dsmax even sketchup would be alright but you cant position/rotate/resize… in it
any suggestions?

You might check out the free version of GameDraw on the Asset Store - you can do all that in Unity.

gamedraw seems cool but its unreliable and hard to use/learn because its inside the editor which means the layout is inconvenient… also i cant seee a way of rotating the texture… but it is one cool tool.
any program that is good for texturing will be great!
any other ideas?

Are you looking for a tool to texture meshes, or to create meshes?

For creation, well, you will certainly not get around Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, C4D or anything alike.

For texturing you will need to look at a complete different kind of software. Everything you named is in the creation category.
There are a couple of image editing tools around - the best known certainly is Photoshop. Then there is GIMP, which is free and also delivers a huge amount of tools. I personally also like Paint.Net (free as well) though it is not so well known or commonly used. Don’t mix that up with Paint which is delivered with Windows! (though that could potentially be used as well, yet I wish everyone a very good time doing your textures in that tool ;)).

Apart from that I would put another tool on the list: Sculptris (again: free). It’s a stripped down version of ZBrush (not free) and both are usually used for sculpting objects, creating very high detail meshes and also normal maps for low poly meshes. Yet I have achieved some in my opinion very good results in terms of e.g. landscape design with Sculptris as well. I don’t think it’s very useful for creating buildings though.
However, one big advantage of the tool is that you can paint any texture or color directly on the mesh in the 3D view and export the resulting texture!

ive made my mesh and want to import it into a texturing program, will sculptris texture FACES of buildings and can i rotate the texture, also can i import .fbx or .3ds or any thing like that

What?

There are two ways to create your textures. The one way is to export the UV patches from your 3D app as an image. Then create the texture in a 2D paint software like Gimp or Photoshop, by using this image with the UV patches on it as a reference. The other way is to paint directly onto your 3D mesh. Blender for example allows to do that.

For both cases you need to unfold / unwrap your mesh first though: No UV mapping means no visible texture. This is the task where you lay out your UV patches so that it fits onto a texture and as as few disortions as possible. Unwrapping is also a job that can be done in Blender.

so uv mapping will fix these problems

1.these bits of texture on different surfaces not aligning

2.and being able to rotate the texture (in this instance the wood grain is going the wrong way)

Yes, both problems are caused by the relation of the texture to the UV. You can either rotate the texture, or you can rotate the UV, though the latter might make more sense to me.

Worldcrafter, I feel your pain, welcome to the fun world of texturing models and UVs!

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
When I want to texture a model, there are a couple of approaches I take:

  1. You have a texture that already exists, like a wood texture or brick texture. You want to wrap this around a fairly simple model.

You need to open the model in your modelling application, like blender or whatever. I’m mostly familiar with blender here, so I’ll use that.
Mark your seams on the model where you need to have them.
Unwrap the model, using either Unwrap or Smart unwrapping, whichever gives you the results you are most happy with.
In the UV editor, open the texture image that you want to use. Place your uvs there how you want them. You can rotate them, size them, etc.
There are a lot of details I am leaving out, like how to assign materials and textures to your model, etc. Sorry…I’m not going to give a complete, step by step thing here, there are plenty of youtube videos for that. You’ll need to do this to actually see the results on your model, as you change the uvs.

When you save out your model with its uv info, you just tell unity to use that texture and it should display correctly.
But, in a nutshell, for number one it is a matter of placing the uvs on the texture image manually, fixing their rotation, scale etc.

  1. You want to paint on the model, creating the texture from what you paint. This is when you have a more complex model, like someone’s face or a dinosaur, and you need a unique texture and not just some repeating wood or brick pattern. You’ll have to paint this on your own.

I don’t believe someone goes into Photoshop and actually paints a warped face texture that will map well onto a face mesh. If they can, I think they have super powers. From what I understand, you have to use an app like ZBrush or Blender, to actually paint ONTO the mesh, and a texture gets created from that.

I’ve used ZBrush for this, not blender, so unfortunately I can’t give tips on how to do this. The deal is…no matter what, you still have to create your model, and to define the UVs for it (unwrap it). You can do this in blender, and when you save your model the UV info is saved with it.
After you paint, your painting app of choice (Blender, ZBrush, etc) will map it to a texture, that you can apply to your model in unity.

Again, there are a lot of details I’ve left out. Modelling to me is pretty straightforward. Texture is seems to be so cumbersome, I can’t say that I enjoy it.
Good luck…I hope that was helpful, and even somewhat accurate information

Yes but in a really inconvenient way. It’s only good for some really simple texturing.

Get 3DCoat for texture painting. You can try it for 30 days.
It’s mostly the best solution to paint the texture directly onto a model. With projection painting for example. In that case it doesn’t matter much how your UV’s are aligned as long they have a similar size.

3d coat looks good-thanks but its a little too complicated for me and is not free, but thanks for your detailed help

UltimateUnwrap3D Pro

It is the absolute king of UV Unwrapping and at a budget cost.

looks good but there isn’t a crack for it (i don’t want to pay because i’me unprofessional) BUT i found something equaly as good call Headus UV Layout but it doesnt texture it obly edits UV’s, does ANYONE??? know what program i can use for applying texture to the uvmapped object?.

WTF?

Are you sure that you want to ask for cracked software here? O.o

That’s not acceptable behavior.

Wow. Does it not bother people anymore to blatantly steal stuff?
