So I am looking for some kind of software which would help me making textures. I am using Unity (ofc) as my game engine and Blender for doing 3d models… but of course I also need textures. I found “Substance painter 2” or “substance designer 6” (not sure which one should I use) but it costs like 160€… (no, I am not going to pirate it). It looks really easy to texture your models, like put your model and go with brush. I just wonder if there is any other software like this? I have GIMP installed, but never used it and it looks like pain in the ass to use it and then UV in Blender… or maybe it’s worth giving it a shot? Please discuss and any reply will be appreciated.
Substance Painter is the one you want for painting. Designer is for making materials (substances, as seen on the asset store). They go well together, and are both very Unity/Unreal-friendly.
Other options: 3DCoat
(Similar to the one above, but no SD integration of course)
As you can see there are limited options on a shoestring budget. Substance is either a subscription, or $99 for one of their apps for a year of updates. I’m pretty happy with Designer, but haven’t used Painter much yet.
These tools do all the magic to extract different maps, like normal maps, detail maps and more, since they work with the 3D model underneath. You’ll get better results than faking it with CrazyBump or similar tools, especially if you are working on physically based materials.
