Hey all, recently I’ve been having the above feeling about posting a topic in the WIP thread, but a few things worry me.
1. The feeling of “The idea is too good” (When it really isn’t) 2. The feeling of “It doesn’t seem ready” 3. The “Oh it’s a rip off” conversation
Basically I have made
A randomly made voxel world which contains different minerals(basic)
Digging and placing of resources
A whole almost polished crafting and inventory system.
But I fear that is just not enough, and that it will be frowned apon as a copy even though it is no the final game and was just a challenge some 16 year old took up.
Or it may just be frowned apon as it does not contain “enough features”.
So what I am asking is, who else gets this feeling?
How do you know when it is ready to even become a WIP?
Your always going to e like that over your own work, there are always improvements, get outside opinions an if everyone likes it and it plays how it should its ready
3.dont get me started, if we have to have another conversation about innovation and originality I’m going to chop my bollocks off. It’s a concept which is tossed around and doesn’t matter, you think anything on the store is original? Probably the 1% and 0.8% that will make no money.
Cut the rope is a key example of what appears to be a successful ‘unique’ project (using unique lightly here)
But then you have angry birds, doodle jump, temple rub, all games with 0 innovation or originality. The only offered e is the art, take an overused game concept, throw in some art with an odd concept, and you have yourself an ‘original’ game that no one will bat an eye lid at in complaints.
Rather than procrastinating by posting stuff like this, let point one fuel your motivation, ignore the inexperienced children whining at you about point 3 and settle on a middle ground for point 2.
Get to work, make them games, show me something pretty.

99% people are referencing you with mine craft, kick them in the ovaries for me. Mine craft is not original.
Think about why you want to post in WIP. Are you looking for feedback? Are you doing early marketing? Testing? Just looking for a pat on the back/encouragement?
If you know what you hope to get out of it, you’ll be in a better position to determine if your current build is enough to get it.
Even if your game IS frowned upon and attacked to hell by other people, don’t let it determine whether YOU are worthwhile enough or doing a good enough job … don’t use other people’s opinions to attack yourself. It’s none of their business what you do. Just put it out there if you want to and let people say what they will and don’t take it personal. Also some criticism can be constructive if it helps you be honest.
I think your question is great.
As far as #3…the “Oh that is a ripoff”…there is nothing you can do about that, because 99% of the time it’s from somebody to dumb to realize that every game they play love is pretty much a ripoff. Haters are gonna hate. The only case I feel it is justified, is when you blatantly just duplicate it (the art and such), instead of putting your own creativity into the results.
#1…honestly, a few hours of gameplay should weed most of these out. I’ll bet there are countless people who dream up a feature and think, OMG THIS WILL BE AWESOME. But once they get real gameplay and try it…it’s meh. Or annoying. Or people just downright hate it. But really, the only way I can think of to know for sure is to put it in, an try it.
Which leads to #2. “It’s not ready”. Personally…there are so many things in WIP that are in early, early alpha. For my project, I feel that would be a mistake. I don’t want to subject people to WIP fatigue. I want to show something to people when it is more than just a concept…I want them to be able to experience real gameplay, and they can enjoy my stuff to some extent. It may be mid to late alpha, or even Beta. I need to it be enough gameplay so that people GET what I am so excited about. But often, I see projects…and wonder when/if they will make it. In a way, that gets sorta discouraging. I’m personally much more…mentally invested and on board the project if I can actually see gameplay and features already in place. With a “coming some day” project that I can’t actually get involved in, there is no investment. But if I could actually start playing all through development, that’s kinda cool.
Anyway, just my $0.02 Good luck in your project…making a minecraft clone is a really, really neat endeavor and such a great learning experience!
