The Collaboration Subforum is practically dead. Do Unity and the community want that?

Just wondering whether the thread approval shouldn’t be removed, although I understand its merits. I mean, look at this:
http://forum.unity3d.com/forums/17-Collaboration

I’d rather have the neverending threads for generic MMORPG ideas back than no readers at all. And I don’t think anyone should decide what games are good and what aren’t based on how well someone is able to articulate his idea. People who can’t articulate their ideas already run into problems because those texts are automatically ignored by most.

(And yeah, I totally admit that I’m anxious because my own thread there is going to be ignored as well)

The Collab section is dead, better to post a job on IndieDB

How are you measuring ‘readers’?

¿Maybe he means ‘posts’?
(Actually, the Collab. section was better when everyone was able to post)

Its funny, the last collaboration post was yesterday, and before that the day before, and before that the day before that! There are collaboration posts being put up daily, so please, do not tell me it is ‘dead’. It is over posted in if you ask me, I mean, having 1 new project minimum started each day seems a bit over done dont you think.

There used to be some replies to every thread, and some actual collaboration, though.

right, but I’d guess the number of readers has declined too (whatever happened to “Views”?), compared to the old, free-for-all collab section - so it’s no miracle that the percentage of them that replied is smaller/non-existent as well.

I’d even go a step further and say that this goes against anything that makes Unity great for hobbyists in the first place.

I do agree (partially). I never look at the Collab section anymore. Considering Unity has new users every day, one post per day is incredibly slow. Of course most of the project won’t get completed. Back in the wild west days of the Collab forum 99% of those games would never be finished, and the same holds true for the 1 per day that’s being posted there now. I don’t think that’s really the point.

I made most of my connections and Unity friends through the collab forum. I do kinda miss that forum… kinda. Like Crocodile Dundee.

The OP is posting from a considered point of view and I greatly respect that but I have to strongly disagree with bringing the old style Collaboration Forum back

The old style collaboration forum, before it underwent radical ‘restructuring’ used to be a Troll Field. The place used to breed incivility.

Honestly speaking , I DID like the kind of trolling fun that existed in the old collab and it made for a lot of hilarity but it came at a cost. The bad atmosphere and flame wars that started there started spreading over to the rest of the forum.

If some trusted regulars want to recreate that kind of fun with their own unofficial web site, they are most welcome, but here at the official Unity forum, my opinion is that its not advisable.

Well, it’s striking how there were lots of active threads, but then, on the current page 28, suddenly almost every post has 0 replies except those that were started before approval was introduced, and even those were left rather abruptly

The zero replies is by design though. It’s not like no one is looking, replies are simply turned off for the section.

I propose the idea of swapping Collaboration with a Contest.

It would be pretty cool for people to have competitions where you are set certain rules, a theme, time limit and you can vote for a winner.

It can then be like a little collaboration game compiling all games into one main menu for viewer to play.

call me dumb but…why? I’d be thankful for any advice there, and I think pms just make it too exclusive.

They can post to the WIP once they have something substantial.

You think you’d be thankful for any “advice”. But what was happening there was not advice. It was trolling and flame wars. Again, I agree that the collab forum is sadly pointless now, but re-opening the flood gates is not the answer.

The exact reasoning for the present structure of the Collab forum, only the Unity Staff will know, but at the time of the change, I think they did seek feedback from the community and based on that discussion, if I were to speculate on the reasons it would probably have to do with the genesis of the flame wars

At the risk of some nostalgia

Typically it would go something like
OP: Posts Game idea(Ranging from the meaningful to the Outrageous)
Critical Poster: Some variant of “Your game idea sucks”(Criticism ranging from Meaningful to Downright Hostile)
OP: Some variant of “This is my thread, my game idea. You don’t like it? Don’t Post here”
Critical Poster: Some Variant of “No way. This is a public forum. I have the right to post here”
…and on and on deteriorating into personal attacks and salty language

I think this kind of thing probably had a lot to do with the way the Collab forum is presently structured the way it is but again I am only speculating here

EDIT: By the way I am not opining that Collab forum should be exactly the way it is right now. If there is some way to improve it without bringing back the ‘wild west’ as khanstruct puts it, I am all for it

Not all forum sections are conducive to public replies. Not having replies doesn’t mean the collaboration section is “dead”…the number of topics there pretty clearly indicates otherwise. The commercial sections typically have few or no replies, because there’s usually not really much point in doing so: all real discussion is going to take place privately. Same deal for Collaboration; the only difference is that the lack of replies is enforced, because it kept getting out of hand.

I like the new collaboration forum, before it was only used for entertainment on a slow Monday morning.
There is still some threads that I would classify as noise, but mostly now it’s finally possible to actually find some interesting projects.

The other point is that the fighting has stopped and some trolls finally left the forums
Besides that it makes the unity forums not look as unfriendly / unprofessional as before.

This entire discussion has been discussed already many times word point for point. And it will continue to be brought up again. It is like a ritual now.

With the old Collab forums, people would just go there, find the most ridiculous and overreaching noob, and then pile on making fun of him for thinking he can make a blockbuster MMORPGFPSRTS in two months with zero dollars. That was 95% of the replies. As much as I sometimes enjoy pointing and laughing at noobs, I completely agree that it’s unprofessional and think Unity’s image is better off without an entire forum full of it.

Word, I agree that it sucks, but there was a thread about this, it turned to a monster: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/167186-Collab-Section-Concerns

Antennae tree, if you are paying attention, why don’t we let the community vote?
