So I’ve finished playing through some games. They were great games. Took hours of my time, and I enjoyed them a lot. So cut a long story short, in more ‘modern’ games, you get to see the ending and… then there are the credits. A lovely long list of names.
See, back in the N64 era, I remember games like Super Mario 64 and TLOZ :OOC having amazing credits sequences, with music, and a flying around of different places within the game. Like it’s worth watching. Nintendo kept this up with Twilight Princess too. Loved that ending. Same with Portal- great credits sequences in that and its sequel.
But I finished Halo 4 over a week ago now, and sure, there’s a crazy ending and blah blah… but the credits? A static picture with some text and some dull music over the top.
What happened to the credits being something worth playing for? And what do you personally think the developers should do? Is enough time being spent on making the credits worth watching or not?
It’s nice to go that extra mile to make the credit sequence entertaining. But I’m sort of glad that developer’s aren’t stressing too much on patting themselves on the back. Focusing on gameplay and fun should always be first, entertaining credits is nice, but not a must have. I also feel that the general public don’t really care about credits, we only care because we are involved in game development.
Edit: Just wanted to add, that SM64 did have memorable ending, made you feel that you accomplished something. I understand your point.
To be honest when I read the first post in the thread I thought it was rather stupid… but it got me thinking, I actually enjoy watching the credits on games like gears or smash bros… having something to watch other than letters is actually really nice. Still not the most important topic ever but hey, you’ve got a point dude.
I was about to bring that one up when I read the OP.
On one hand I agree that cool credits are sweet. On the other hand, the developer needs to pay a graphic designer and/or an animator and possibly another artist to make them, when those people could be contributing to the game in other ways.
In which case AC3 must have the worse, since its 10+ mins of text scroll that cannot be skipped! I understand developers wanting to be credited for there work, I know I’d want to be credited, but I see no reason to force players to sit through them. Do they really think the majority of people actually sit there for 10 minutes or more watching the scrolling text? Nope, you go off and make a coffee or check out forums on the internet or watch some cement dry
