If you don’t know what DICE+ is but are intrigued, keep reading
DICE+ is a controller in the shape of a die, created with one idea in mind - make people play together no matter what age group they are.
When you picture a die in your mind you first think “board games!”. But of course board games are not the only category that this little die can power. DICE+ is a fully fledged controller that can be used for anything. Inside this little cube you can find;
We have another exciting piece of news to share with you
Game Technologies - the creators of DICE+ acquired us few months ago. The decision was quick because our idea matched what they wanted, a company that can create beautiful games with the latest technology. You can’t beat a technology that is not yet available on the market
Now, what can you do with all this? If you are interested in developing games using DICE+, visit http://developers.dicepl.us and register to get an account. You will get access to the SDK and the documentation. In addition you will be able to buy DICE+ for 99USD with free shipping worldwide.
Be aware that since we have a limited run of dice, we have to screen every account to see if these accounts are legit developers.
The “lack of support for iOS” is actually kind of the other way around. While I don’t remember the details, early iOS devices have bluetooth hardware but won’t communicate with any devices that haven’t gone through the appropriate hardware approval process with Apple.
If they don’t get their hardware approved (MFi), then they aren’t supporting it. Semantics aside, whatever the reason, the result is the same, the thing won’t work on a pretty sizable chunk of the iOS market. It’s sounds neat, but probably won’t get much traction. Still might get one to play with if the reviews are decent and they stick around for a while.
I see that this topic got some traction, so let me replay to all your questions:
Lovrenc: no. We support only iOS and Android
zombiegorilla: The developer kit is transparent and it have a special developerKey that allows you to code against DICE+. When you want to publish your game. You have to ask for a publicKey so your game will work with the blue DICE+ (consumer one) We do this to check if the implementation of DICE+ is correct so the user have a consistent experience.
TylerPerry: i’m sorry but this is the default price. We go at events like Unite, GDC etc. this events are the best place to get some free devkits.
angrypenguin: first answer is in point 2. About the thermometer, well, we have 2 of them: one in the CPU one in the Magnetic field sensor. We decided to expose one for fun
Lovrenc: the thermometer is used by the Magnetic field sensor for calibration.
zombiegorilla: we don’t have the MFI chip, on iOS we support only devices that use Bluetooth LE (iPad 3th gen, 4th gen, iPad Mini, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5)
Is there no way to develop for the consumer version of the DICE+ then? I already have a consumer version and can see the potential for it, I’d be rather disappointed if I have to buy another version to develop for it.
