The Feedback Section Needs More..Feedback (From the Unity Team)

The “Feedback” section on the site needs more input from the Unity team.

There is a growing sense of frustration that I feel and see echoed in many of the suggestion comments. Even if it’s not the case, it looks like suggestions/issues are not being addressed, or that we’re just not being informed of whats going on. The feedback section is a great tool, but it feels very one-sided at the moment.

There’s also the general concern of important but smaller things getting lost in the shadow of big new features.

Suggestions and questions:

1. Can more items be marked as states other than active, on a regular basis? : “Under Review”, “Planned”, “Started”, “Completed”, “Declined”, or “Invalid”. I’d rather see something declined or be commented on than just sit there.

2. Can we get updates on lingering but very important items? (There are some stagnant items marked as planned; see #3. There are also some with hundreds of votes with no change in status.)

3. A perfect case in point, and because it needs bringing up on its own: What in the Sam Hill is going on with Unity’s Input System? (1702 votes)

Take a look through the several pages of comments there to see what I’m talking about. It’s now going on 6 years, and we still don’t even have a function to get the name of the key set in the InputManager. The only viable option for input (especially any other basics needs like setting keys in-game, switching out controllers), is to use a 3rd party solution or code your own…

I’d like to share a few quotes from that suggestion link, which highlight the general feeling:

“This is one of those things that makes me wonder “why wasn’t that a priority?””

“It’s ridiculous that this is still an issue. I had to code a huge overcomplicated input wrapper to make up for this lack of basic functionality. I’m very proud of my work, but it should not have been necessary to begin with.”

“Eurgh”

“Wow this suggestion was first posted in 2009,… its now 2014. Five years. Any reason why this hasn’t been done?” (last year)

I’ll stop there and leave off the more angry ones.

This whole thing has been bothering me for a while, and I’ve just ignored it, kept my head down and tried to just work on my projects. What through me for a loop was when I started seeing comments spanning multiple years with no change. Eurgh indeed.

I think this is a real problem.
The good news is that it can be fixed fairly easily! Can someone start to remedy this? Thoughts?

Side Note: It also would be nice to be able to delete comments on feedback.

I am being intentionally vague here but Unite Europe is next week and we have some exciting news!
