The Nanny Goat and her Three Kids (WiP)

Hi, guys!

I’m here to present to you today a game we’ve been working on for about about 5 months (taken into consideration the different engine switches, issues we ran into using Unity, the time spent to actually learn the engine, etc.).

It’s an educational video game, intended for 4+ year old children, based on a Romanian folk story called “The Nanny Goat and her Three Kids”. We’re going through beta stage right now, fixing bugs and such, so a release date isn’t far off. Also, the game is bilingual (Romanian and English).

Here are some screenshots from the game (unbuilt, taken from the Editor). Please note that the game is still in progress.

For the techie freaks out there, we’re using dynamic lighting along with lightmaps on a 4 square kilometers terrain. Basically, it can act as a huge sandbox.

Comments and critiques are (always) welcome!

This looks really good. Congratulations! What is the story about?

It’s a folk story about how a family of goats is ravaged by the Big Bad Wolf, allowed inside the secured home by the oldest, most ill-behaved and least prudent of the kids. The only one of the children to survive is the youngest and most obedient, who then helps his mother plan her revenge on the predator (not that kind of predator).

It’s pretty straightforward.

Here’s the intro movie (in-game graphics):

WOOW! So freakin’ awesome!

When will a demo be available? And what languages will the game be available in?

Well, a demo version should be available shortly, though I can’t quite say when.

It’s gonna be in English and Romanian.

Thanks for all the kind words, I’ll keep you guys posted.

Also, there’s a Facebook page here.

… here we are. The gameplay video’s up.

You can view it HERE.

Many of you may not get what’s going on in the video, so let me break it down for you. The game focuses on the Romanian folk story “The Nanny Goat and her Three Kids” (it’s similar to the Grimm brothers’ “The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids”).

While the gameplay itself is pretty straightforward (intended for children), with puzzles and choice-based systems, it follows the story by the book.

In other words, you’re playing the story.

Anyway, comments and crits always welcome!

wow, this game is really cool!

I am amazed at how cool this game is.

Thanks, Mike.

There are some minor bugs which we’re planning to solve ASAP. As you might have already seen, there’s an issue with the camera while dumping frames - it orbits and zooms really fast.

I guess the dumping script and our camera script aren’t working together very well.

Thanks, runner!

Well, we’re really trying to keep the puzzles not very difficult, given the intended target-age. The game world is pretty big, as I’ve mentioned before, with 4 square kilometers of open-space, and kids will surely want to explore every bit of it.

However, the narrative does have its downsides, restricting the gameplay to be quite linear. Fortunately, kids won’t mind that, because it’ll be like playing an interactive story. They alone unfold the story.

Of course, “hardcore” gamers aren’t attracted to these kind of games, so I don’t expect everyone to be crawling all over the place.

Another feature of the game consists in the fact that we actually have two versions. The regular one you just saw, with SSAO, Bloom, realistic shaders, etc. and a cartoonish one, featuring simple shaders, outlines, no shadows, which is intended for younger children.

Younger children tend to be more attracted by simple and colorful shapes, while the older ones can actually distinguish complex objects and appreciate a high graphic quality.

Anyhow, stay tuned for more videos and info.

PS: Unfortunately, due to the heavy graphics, we can’t bundle the game in a webplayer, but we might just release a demo version soon.
