Looks interesting. I wanted to get an iPhone4 for retina display testing, but this is a lot cheaper.
Can anyone estimate whether or not performance between the iPhone4 and the new Touch will be the same?
I’d hate to have to buy them both, especially since I just got me an iPad ![]()
There was one generation where the iPod touch was a bit faster than the iPhone, but usually they are the same.
jobs said on stage that it has the same processor as the iphone 4, and it has the same screen, so i guess they should be almost identical?
i ordered one yesterday. same here, just got an ipad and was thinking of buying me a iphone 4 to test. but now i think i’ll skip the iphone 4.
Yeah, I’m definitely getting one of these. ![]()
technically yes.
The question is if apple did the same as on the second generation, where the artificial cpu clocking lock on the iPhone was removed on the itouch which can take the higher battery drain due to not being poised by 3G network chips.
It must not be forgotten that a similar lock was applied to the iphone 4 (the A4 in it is downclocked to around 800mhz, where as the ipad is on 1ghz and technically the itouch 4 could be as well as the cpu used in the a4, samsungs humingbird, runs at 1ghz in the galaxy s for example)
I just ordered mine as my contract runs too long to wait for an iphone 4.
But I’m sure the technology pages will have their benchmark results online before I even have mine in hands ![]()
yeah, I’m very happy about the availability of the new iPods in Switzerland aswell. I couldn’t find a place to get an iPhone 4 (besides they’re very expensive just to dev. on them). Let’s hope they didn’t lie with the 5-6 days delivery time.
We will see
so far the times on the Apple page normally was correct.
And yeah, getting an iPhone 4 here is horror … yet I actually wanted a Galaxy S, which is not available at all anywhere, totally out of stock. Guess samsung is running the stocks clean for the froyo based delivery mid sept
I bought a new 27in iMac today and asked about their ‘free iPod Touch’ deal for teachers and students hoping I could get a gen 4… Alas, it is only gen 3 which is given away. Well I thought I’d try!
Regards,
Matt.
Is the cheapest one based on 3GS like last generation, when the cheapest one was based on the 3G?
I was just trying to find out exactly that. If it is, it’s well hidden on the Apple website.
All three are listed as having the retina display. The 3GS’s GPU is the current GPU, so the only possible difference would be the CPU. That would be ridiculous; using a different processor would be more expensive, as A4 is in everything now. Same hardware aside from storage.
I want to play games on the Nano… ![]()
The iPod does look cool. I may get one here in a few months.
As far as I can tell, the new iPod touch is a iPhone 4 without the bugs (like, having to get it from the Telekom or AT&T or whatever other mafia corporation got the exclusive rights to sell those nice phones - to me, that’s the worst bug the iPhone 4 has … seriously … it actually means I’m not gonna get one, at least for now).
I already have an iPhone 3GS, so I can test 3G functionalities - for the rest, as far as I can tell, the new iPod touch will do just fine. And it only costs EUR 229,00 (the 8GB which is enough for a testing device), while I guess getting an iPhone 4 would cost me around EUR 1.000,00.

You can get one in Italy or France, for ~630Euros, unlocked and contract free!
Get an iPhone 4. Cut 3G and phone capabilities, avoid antenna-epic-fail, cut 400€ the price. Now you have an iPod Touch 4G.
Remember, the hardware is not related to the price when you talk about “brands”.
Freak info: Bugatti Veyron costs to VW twice it’s street price (yes, the more than 1 million Eur car).
No, the Touch has an inferior camera (1280x720 sensor, fixed focus) and a marginally inferior display (poorer viewing angles). Not saying it’s not a great deal, etc., but get your facts straight.
As far as anyone can tell, performance is otherwise identical.
thank you for the info, I didn’t know that. Worse camera, worse display.
iPod touch 4G has only 256 MB DRam and no IPS display.
In any case i’m thinking to buy one as a testing device.
useful charts:
the 256mb just struck me too and that in an unpleasant way.
Thats a problem and means I will wait another 2 week cause I downgraded to the 8GB model as I don’t need a larger one for testing.
I can life with the screen being the 3GS one at higher res cause that does not touch me much but the RAM cut without any note anywhere at all is something I didn’t expect and thats a problem as I wanted it for more than just retina screen size testing.
I’m surprised that they decided to cut it as apple made quite some fuzz about the requirement of 512mb for iMovie on the idevices, yet from what I recall it was mentioned in relation to the itouch 4 wasn’t it?
i am still undecided to buy an iPod Touch 4G ( 8 GB ) or iPhone 4.
For testing purpose maybe the new iPod touch is enough.
For now I have iPhone 3G and iPad.
