The Other Brothers Beta

Hey there folks!

For those who backed us we have a little treat! Our “Beta” is now available (you should have gotten an email). PocketGamer was so nice to write a nice review about the beta here:

Additionally, Kotaku wrote an article as well:

Thanks for checking it out and enjoy the beta!!

You can visit our main site at: http://tobgame.com

Congrats! Looks amazing!

Thanks! So far response has been very positive and we’re happy with the outcome! The review on Pocketgamer pretty much confirms that we put our efforts into the right direction.

It is coming together very nicely, and those are great reviews! Hopefully the Kickstarter thing was just a minor stumble. Best of luck!

This all makes for a gameworld that’s animated (in both senses) and feels alive. Every corner hides a unique obstacle …”. I think this is going to be a new hit on the store. Congrats…

Congrats

Thanks everybody! We really put a lot of effort into each level and aspect of the game. It may have taken us a bit longer and there is still lots of work to do but we believe we are on the right track! Thanks again folks

Oop that reminds me I still haven’t contributed … done!

Good luck guys, just contributed via IndieGogo!

Thanks JohnnyA and Karl! We appreciate it  Hope you guys enjoyed the beta!

Visually it looks fantastic, but I still don’t see the appeal in the gameplay.

Are there bosses? Is it a coop game? Are there puzzles? Is there shooting or action involved? Is it an adventure game? I don’t see the fun in just collecting stuff just to increase your score in a seemingly open, non-linear platformer game. The screenshots on your website makes it look like there’s something truly unique to the game, but the video on Kontaku makes it look so boring.

In recent years I’ve really enjoyed Meat Boy, MoneySeize (another flash game very similar to Meat boy), Braid and Spelunky in the platformer genre. Those games either had truly unique gameplay (the last two) or hair pulling difficulty done right (the first two).

A guy on Kotaku said:

I also think it reminds me of Earthworm Jim, but Earthworm Jim wasn’t a good game. It suffered from a lot of things imo. The messy level design and “floaty” visuals where it’s hard to tell what can be interacted with and what can’t are my least fond memories of Earthworm Jim, but they are also the two things which make me think of Earthworm Jim when I watch the video on Kotaku. Even though the visuals are crisp I feel it’s really hard to tell platforms from background elements and interactive elements from scenery.

The only thing Meat Boy, MoneySeize, Braid and Spelunky lacked was proper coop, or even coop in any form. I think a coop platformer where one would have to play together to complete each level like in Portal 2 could be amazing. The name “The Other Brothers” and all the screenshots with the brothers standing side by side made me think this focused on coop, but the video on Kotaku just looks mindless.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Please try it before you criticise so we know that the criticism is valid

If you have the beta you will know already that co-op is part of the game and will be the most enjoyable way to play it. In fact our next beta will probably feature it along with proper joystick / joypad support. Thanks all!

Great stuff guys, played through the demo and really enjoyed it all. I can’t wait for joypad support, that will really step it up a notch. Keep up the amazing work.

How very dare you. Earthworm Jim is a great game.

Congrats on getting the beta out and people playing it. Can’t really comment on it myself though having not played it.

I think that EWJ was great too  in fact our parallax was inspired by it - in EWJ, you don’t have the parallax move at all, and in TOB, the parallax is a “plate” or “window” constrained to a specific area so this way we’re able to have multiple layers of parallax with completely different visuals next to each other, regardless of how insane the level designer has been! thank EWJ for the inspiration though!

It doesn’t look like you are getting much on indie go go. This makes me sad. Still, enjoying the beta. Keep it up.

I don’t really mind much, so long as the people on IGG really want to play it and help shape it. If they are made happy, then I am happy. Of course a successful game at the end of it would help a lot. I might even keep my car another year :stuck_out_tongue:

Bought the Art Pack for the selfish reasons of studying your pixel art, but how and when is it delivered? I haven’t received any emails apart from the one confirming my contribution to the project.

Also thought I could at least test the beta seeing as prejudged your game pretty harshly in the last post.

PS3 and xBox Controller support are now in the latest beta build! Re-download your beta copy and give it a whirl!

You were a real mean sonavagun! I broke down in TEARS! But seriously - thank you for your support! The art pack will have some tips from bjorn hurri and it has not been finished yet, so if there are particular things you’d love to know/find out please post on our official tob forum and I will make sure the team sees your comments about what you’d like to see included! I think tutorials and technique is a nice reason for people to grow artistically and get the style, as well as perhaps some exclusive non internet vids of him working ?
