The Potential of Sentience

I just wanted to share something I found beautiful and inspirational with my fellow members.

We all have one thing in common, our home…

Nasa is like a welfare program for really smart people — Wanda Sykes

Love that quote ! Cool video.

Excellent video. Very inspiring. It’s good to know that not all the media out there showcases how we push ourselves apart from one another but how we can build a better future together.

Beautiful and poignant. I rather enjoyed it. In truth, I often find myself both deeply humbled and encompassingly enraged by our species. We have a vast reservoir of potential… that we constantly squander on meaningless trivialities. Luckily, there are always a handful in each generation that manages to step forward in progress; dragging the rest of us with them.

Thank you for sharing.

That’s nice for humanity and all, but it won’t mean squat when you die.

Carl Sagan died before we discovered life on other planets (one of his dreams). Now what?

I tend to disagree. It means the same thing and has the same value whether I am here or not. My existence (or lack there-of) does not increase or depreciate the accomplishments of the species, as a whole.

To put it into perspective, on the day we do discover life on other planets, it will still be a tremendously monumentous occasion… regardless of the fact that Carl Sagan did not get to see it.

Yes…it will be great for the humans of the future.

But for the rest of us, and Carl Sagan, it is/was meaningless. “We” won’t get to see it. And that there lies the fundamental problem.

No, it wasn’t meaningless. Carl has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to look at the sky and wonder, to dream as he did. Carl may not have seen his dream come true, but that dream lives on in others and will continue until it’s realized.

The message is not how great the future of humanity will be, but this:

“Every thing that has ever happened has lead up to now, and everything we do leads up to the future. We are the building blocks of greatness. And the Earth, the pale blue dot, will always be our beautiful home. Enjoy it now, as others, in the future, may only look at it in the sky of their distant world.”

Outer space will probably just end up being a quaint hobby like mountaineering and hiking .

How many of us want to spend a week climbing a mountain?. How many of us will want to spend a month travelling to Mars?.

Cyberspace is the future. Let’s bring the mountain to us…
