I am making an MMO game. Which will be obviously cool and was having a COOL name in my mind for this game.
But… when I googled a bit, I found out that name is identical to one tv show recently aired in another country (UK) that I wasn’t aware until the moment. Now my problem is I have registered a website that include this title and really willing to use that name as it suits best for the theme of my game
My question is will I land into a legal trouble ?
I am willing to openly clarify that my game has nothing to do with the tv show except the title is same. Help me friends. Please advice me on this.
It kind of depends on the name. If it’s just a word - e.g. “Hunter”, then I wouldn’t worry too much. But if it’s something very specific - e.g. “Big Trouble In Little China”, then you’re going to have issues.
Yes, that is a “Top Priority” at the moment. it is more than 65% completed (programming of game play mechanics)and now most of the UI/GUI work is pending that is being handled by my friend. So I am having a bit free time to set up the website forums etc…! Made a desired domain name look up and since the domain was free I quickly registered it too.
But yes it was a mistake, not to Google it before registering the name.
Im glad. Try to stick around and show off some of that sexy work.
On topic: A general name like : “shooter” or “zombie slayer” are almost impossible to get any governmental protection on; So you would be most likely legally safe to use them. An option is to always just add a suffix like: “Skyrim : Dragonborn”. It would have been legal if “Skyrim” was already registered when Bethesda was developing Skyrim.
When you have set minimalistic goals and went through meaningful pre-production and development planning iterations… its relatively fair to say the project is 65% completed up till now. But not a good practice to predict exactly how much time the rest of the % will take to finish it…
yeah I know its never above 90% anyway. even when it will be released
I don’t understand your comment, the main thing to implement into a game is game mechanics. Its a great thing that they’ve got this far i wouldn’t knock their ability.
also OP good luck as other user’s have said its best just to finish the game then decide a game’s name.
Making a good name is a matter of first finishing your game and then reflecting on it and finding a name that feels right. Make a list of names you would ideally want to call it (pay no concern to copyright issues yet), then mix and match from your list as needed until the name is unique.
Its not a bad thing to receive holistic information at all, but guys pls lets stick to the main topic of conversation which is Information about Legal Issue I may face.

Game server : Photon Server.
Coding architecture: Huge topic. Please ask me specific questions so I can reply. Good if you PM me, this is not the right thread.
Prevent cheating: Nothing explicitly done yet except implementing best coding practice. We need to be popular first in order to receive the cheating threats, right ???

Thanks for the input.
I think I got an idea about how to make things work out further. Thanks all. I will update soon on this.
