We are a team of 6 graduated students from Supinfogame (France). We’ve been working very hard during 10 months and we are very proud to show our Unity project.
You can visit our devblog on the following link : HERE
Our game is made for gamer’s computer and for widescreen resolution (1680*1050), thus you need, in order to play correctly, a less than three year old hardware
Thank you guys ! Yeah you’re right I’ll put this in the gallery section. We are using our own billboard script, it was a real pain in the ass to optimize
Actually, you’re not as smart or clever as you think. Many laptops have resolutions lower than this. Rather than make smartass comments about what people may or may not have, your game should run on many machines (this is also known as “good programming”, “understanding the market”, or sometimes just “common sense”). Supporting a wide range of systems has been a key strategy for Blizzard; however, they have enjoyed only moderate success over the years so there is little to learn from them.
Many MacBooks have 1440x900; the standard display on an Alienware M17x is 1440x900, unless you don’t mind pushing the laptop into the $2,000+ range for an upgraded monitor; the mid-range Studio XPS 16 has a 1600x900 panel; the highest rated laptop on NewEgg (ASUS N61JQ-X1) has a 1366x768. I can build on this list all day long.
The fact is, a lot of people only run laptops and any publisher would just laugh at you for suggesting that most laptops have no business running your game. In most months, laptops outsell desktops, but if they aren’t smart enough to buy a computer that you find appropriate for your game, you probably wouldn’t want them to play it anyway. It’s a shame too, because the game certainly looks interesting.
This game is only a prototype and we are aware it’s not a very good choice to run it only on one resolution. As for the “good programming thing”, remember we are a team of students, not professional programmers.Actually we only had one programmer and he is a self-thaught one.
Of course if we decide to port this prototype into a real game (one we woul actually want to sell) we will optimize it for more systems configurations.
We definitely didn’t want to sound “smartass” as you say, we just wanted to warn those of you who wanted to test the protoype for it is not fully optimized yet and might not run perfectly on a laptop or an older computer.
why are you so aggressive about this? it’s not even like you paid any money to play this game.
i think it was also pretty obvious that it’s not a final version.
i don’t consider a laptop a “gamer’s computer” anyways, especially a MacBook, which can’t even test it anyways because there’s only a windows version anyways.
Well, then the problem isn’t old computers, it’s a shortcoming in the application. The cause should always be assigned fair and properly.
Really though, I can see no reason for it to not support lower resolutions. It won’t look as nice, but that’s not a big deal.
A lot of people would consider a laptop a gaming computer, particular many companies which advertise and sell them as such. While the MacBook is not designed for gaming, it was just one example of many. Disregarding one system of the several listed is quite distant from disregarding all of them.
The idea of a “gamer’s computer” has damaged PC gaming, so it is not a term any game developer should regard as helpful.
The original problem I have with the post is not that the game only runs on 1680x1050, which is just not putting effort into a fairly simple thing and making sure the artists understand the requirements. One of my projects requires three computers just to play, two of which are required to be touchscreen. The problem is the idea that any computer less than three years old should support that resolution, which is nothing more than a astounding display of market ignorance.
Lastly, for the love of etiquette, can people not post massive pictures on the forums that force the whole page to require horizontal panning?
That’s nice, Hendrix, but not everybody wants to push their browsers out to fill out large portions of their screen and not everybody is browsing the forums on high resolution monitors.
The art style is absolutely superb, but the gameplay mechanics are not to be overlooked either. I only played briefly, but I really liked the way you dealt with control and the free-form sailing about reminded me of the best parts of Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker.
Regarding the resolution thing; by default it had 1024x768 selected, but that cut off part of the title screen. So I guess what they’re saying is: “we designed it at 1600x1200 so please use that to see it as intended”? (and running that res may tax older PCs). Maybe not the best way of wording it, granted. As a French group, there may also be a slight language issue (although the OP’s English is near perfect).
Call it a hunch, but I think that was just a little tongue in cheek.
But yes, to the OP, please change images to 800 px width or something.
The game can be run in any resolution but we designed GUI interfaces for the 1680*1050 resolution. We didn’t find yet a solution to this (a part from redoing GUI’s for differents resolutions) but since it’s a prototype and we were short on time, we just made it for our own computers and they happen to be equipped with 22" screens.
I guess it was a wording problem in the 1st post as Novodantis said. Sorry for that.
My resolution is also high but some people also would like to read the text… meaning zooming in.
So yes, I think images not larger then 600 width seems to be good practice.
On an other note; this game looks absolutely gorgeous, congratulations.
@ JRavey it seems that you are the one who is trying to be a smartass. :x Who cares on what system the game runs. It is their prototype and they may do whatever they please with it. They do not need lecture about bla bla bla that every game needs to run on shitty computer and etc.
And trust me these guys are intelligent enough. Just look what they were able to build!! The game looks and feels like it has been developed by a big studio with a lots of time and money. But they are only 6 students who made it in 10 months.
If they need to optimize this game for commercial purpose, they will.
Ok back to the topic. This prototype is absolutely amazing. Its the guys like you who inspire the rest of us. Every now a and then some genius comes up with something fantastic.
I would also like to comment on a gameplay. What a freaking wonderful game idea I love it. The environment is superb and it is very relaxing to go on your fish boat and just do some fishing
The whole game feels superb. And kudos to the one who were able to pull off this fantastic intro. Ok i will go back into game. There is some fishing to do
Hi guys, I’m part of the team working on this game. Thanks for all the nice comments, we are actively looking for publishers in order to complete our game. There’s still a lot of work to do but we hope we will have the oportunity to finish it one day
Concerning the WASD control for the boat, we wanted to keep a similarity with the real movement on an actual helm, but I reckon it’s not that easy to control the boat. We will do some tests with dual controls (mouse and keyboard).
We are also posting the game in various competitions, one of them demands public votes in order to qualify. If any of you happen to pass by http://www.ganuta.com/front/103-75-1-Galerie , please vote for us
