So Unity did a google hang out - nice idea, shame they didn’t promote it better. Don’t know about other people, but I rarely visit the announcements forum, so it would have been nice to have had the announcement in here or provided as an email.
Anyway I’ve just started watching, looks interesting.
Overall I have to say I really like the idea of Unity doing these hang outs. I think they need a bit more preparation, sorting out mic volumes ( so everyone has the same level) and maybe choosing some questions prior to the hang out to allow speakers to prepare answers, then have a short ‘open’ Q A at the end.
Not sure using youtube comments to ask questions is a great idea. It doesn’t really allow people to explain issues/questions as fully as is needed or to reply efficiently to the answers being given.
For example around 28 min mark AngryAnt discusses multi-touch support. Though he does his best to answer the question I think (from memory) that most of his answer is simply incorrect. Though this could have been discussed in the comments, its not really a suitable method for dialog, so it would be nice to address this issue for future hang outs.
With regard to this specific answer, I think if you searched the forums here you’d find posts that effectively say that whilst Unity does ‘support’ multi-touch, it does this by relying on windows drivers to convert multi-touch into standard mouse events, but that is not multi-touch support, since you don’t get multi-touches or gestures. So Unity ‘technically’ supports multi-touch, but doesn’t actually give ‘multi-touch’ options.
As to suggesting using the asset store I find that a big disappointment for two reasons.
Firstly i’m not sure there is a suitable solution to multi-touch on the store, I know of a few solutions using open-source projects, but I’m pretty sure they also suffer from various issues.
Secondly it would seem that Unity is failing to support a reasonable proportion of the users. These users are like the OP in the video, developers who create installations/kiosks ,e.g. for museums, events, etc, where a slightly different focus to games is needed, e.g. HD video support, complete and native multi-touch support. Though some of this is supported via 3rd party, it would be nice to see Unity focus a little bit more on providing features for these types of users. They can even make these features Pro only, since developers are going to be doing this for paid clients, so there is no issue purchasing Unity Pro for it.
