First announced in the collaboration forum just over a week ago, the Whirld project is now well under way!
I just released the first version of Mars Explorer that can load simple game worlds to play off of the internet - and along with it - the complete source code for my current Whirld library.
So far, the Whirld library’s sole functioning component is it’s BZFlag world loader - but my next step is to create a specialized Unity world format and supporting library code.
If you are interested in contributing to - or even just utilizing - this library in your Unity applications, please join me! Especially if you have experience in the efficient serialization and regeneration of terrain and mesh objects
Sounds like a great idea, when I’ve got a bit more time on my hands I’ll will have a look at it. One simple suggestion is adding option to give a name to for the GameObject when loading a world so you can easily use it for incremental loading (as currently you always overwrite the earlier loads).
Hypothetical examples of where the Whirld library could be utilized? The Wiki page outlines numerous cases - but the basic idea is that if you are writing a game that includes more than one world for players to enjoy, there is an excellent chance that the Whirld project will benefit your game.
Thanks for working on this (and releasing it)! Someone just recently asked me about serve dynamically generated content to Unity from a web server without having to preprocess all the assets in the Editor, maybe in a format like an X3D scene. Looks like this might fit the bill.
I have been dreaming of this project for months now, but Unity’s SOC program inspired me to realize it at last, even though I wasn’t accepted. Perhaps Unity will generously donate me a Pro license anyway out of the kindness of their heart. I don’t need cash, but a Pro license would be immeasurably awesome
I designed the UTW format around JSON, and it’s simple syntax should be prefect for describing server generated worlds in. Please let me know if it works for you!
