To say the notifications, search, layout, well pretty much everything except the aesthetics are bottom of the barrel garbage, would be an understatement.
Not sure what was wrong with the fully functional old forums. Welp. Unity’s done it again.

Search is terrible.
In other cases, I am absolutely happy with that.
Blue notifications marks and other settings you can customize in Profile Preferences. So I changed blue marks to gray text instead, and there is no annoying factors anymore.
Apparently it’s only bad for us cause we are old
What don’t you like about the search, we revamped it a while ago to improve its hit rates( a hidden setting was incorrect so it was only indexing 5% of the site )
I think that a few people are familiar with advanced search with using such constructions like, for example, “keyword”
See the difference:
Simple search - no relevant content
Advanced search - relevant content, but not on the 1st place
No, it is not. AR keyword is enough to make a search:
search was always terrible. So I think it’s a wash. I like the UI a bit more, but still trying to find my way around the site.
So for 1 it is doing an “or” search so there are relevant posts there : the word “bundle” appears as does “appeARs” I agree not the best but we can investigate this
2 We reordered by post date not relevance due to feedback from people that they didn’t want older posts they wanted newer ones, so we can investigte and see if we can tweak the weighting/ranking to give a happy medium
and 3 we can lower the char count rule to 1 char but its pretty normal to have a min char count for a search, and 2 chars is low. I will investigate the stop list and see if we can lower the charcount rule to 1
Thank you for helping the community get better!
I might be just… old. I am turning 37, but the left bar is a nightmare. It’s so incredibly cluttered. The relationships between things is confusing to me. I just want to know what the forums are, and how to find the one I want/need. Since there is already a main page for the forum, similar to a classic board, why have all of that on the left bar too?
Why does this massive list of links need to be on the left, with no parent/child relationships? It honestly looks like Unity Editor’s context menu when you right click in the Assets menu. It gives you a novel’s worth of options that fall off the bottom of the screen. Thought at least this one is scrollable.
It’s just giving me too much information all in one place. It’s incredibly overwhelming to me.
Why when posting a reply, do I only have about 1/6th of the screen to type in by default. It should be ore expanded by default IMO. And it shouldn’t be just half of the typing area… I don’t need to see what my post will look like 95% of the time, because most posts will be plain text. Get that preview out of there by default. I will click a button when I need the preview. Until then, give me more space to type…
Better yet, don’t fix what isn’t broken. Put a new input area below the thread with inputs for typing, like the previous forum, and every other forum. This modal/overlay is just annoying to me. Not a major issue, but it’s tons of little annoyances like that which eventually drive me away.
Again, this may be because I am getting older. But I don’t think this design ever would have been appealing or “good” to me at any age, but I just might have been able to make heads and tails of it better when I was younger. I just don’t know.
I will say → I know the previous forums were a third party tool (or correct me if I am mistaken), but it was like the old Unity Answers. And not having control over things like some of the source code was a nightmare for scalability. So if what I recall above is correct, I totally understand scrapping the old forums and doing something new, but this ain’t it, chief.
You’re right. Now we just need slidey UI like all the cool SnapTok apps
I keep getting random badges which is nice, but where is the pending badges page and do I get a prize for getting all? Actually it would be intuitive way for people to learn to use everything. Im still a bit clueless on what i dont know.
Maybe it’s because I’m an old fogey but:
On the positive side, the new reply text editor, uploading images, etc is really great so far. Kudos
I just minimize it.
A draggable window would be great too.
OMG, I didn’t notice the tiny little arrow at the bottom that is slightly darker than the off-white grey! Thanks for the heads up. Will be minimizing that from now on.
This is a reply but it didn’t get posted as a reply/quote/etc, it’s at the root level of posts, HOW STUPID! YET ANOTHER UNCLEAR FEATURE!
Also apparently pressing bold and italic are mutually exclusive, you have to manually combine them. That’s interesting.
Damn, I didn’t realize that as a millennial I am now ‘old’
I really don’t know who designs this junk. The thumbs up / thumbs down buttons only SHOW you who’s reacted that way, there’s a separate thumbs up button for actually reacting. Because that’s totally obvious and convenient. Two of the same buttons that do different things, without tooltips. GENIUS!
Then we have this bar below the post that says 8 users, with images of 5 users beside it. Clicking it brings up a list of users with numbers on it… What are the numbers? It’s anyones guess! Is it post count? Is it a level? Is it the number of times they’ve seen a unicorn???
This “clean” UI design trend is garbage. You have to guess everything, or be born knowing how to understand it.
Page numbers. Alls ill say.
Lots to complain about but this annoys me everytime and ill fight it every step of the way.
Pages are antiquated honestly.
Some websites I use daily went from infinitely scrolling to having pages and it just made them substantially less functional.
There’s no real argument for pages other than it’s what you’re used to. Give it time and be open to change and you won’t miss it.
If they had pages then they wouldn’t need to make a search that supercedes the browser search. Browser search doesn’t work on streaming endless pages.
Hit Ctrl-F twice and it brings up browser search.
Yeah but because longer threads stream in (or whatever they do) the browser search doesn’t search the entire thread. Which is why, I assume, they made their own search
