I could change the topic as i have only created the base. (characters, inventory and stuff).
True…
Not yet. Reason above. Gameplay video causes game to lag…
So it seems that a lot of people here are done with zombies… Maybe i will think of another theme that goes well with adventure… Suggestions, crazy ideas from you guys are welcomed. Keep in mind that this will still be set in a post-apocalyptic world, maybe a game like the movie After Earth, where the Earth is ruled by animals and giant creatures… But alas, i cant model and animate animals… Just buildings and a few humanoids. Finally, what do you guys think about the screenshots? I’m asking this cuz I’m making this game based on community suggestions…
Update 6/12/2014
I will be uploading a demo of the environment/world in a few days with some working stuff.
I think there could never be enough post-apocalyptic survival games. There is something in this genre that could create so much immersion and entertainment for players.
Sadly, I haven’t yet played one that is really worth it. Maybe Rage, Fallout and The Last Of Us can truly come close the real-deal. I’m so tired of games like The Forest, Rust or DayZ. They are so empty and so pointless.
My vision of post apocalyptic game is a mix between driving vehicles over large deserted areas (Mad Max), gathering survivors around you (base/community building) and fighting against a common foe. Also, why does it always the common enemy must be a mutant (zombie or something similar?) Why not robots? Aliens? Insects (like in Stellar Infantry)? Heck, even people vs people. Seriously, I think that human beings can be more terrifying and despicable than any zombie.
I am actually basing my first game off of the Alien-Space world type of thing. I haven’t started, as I am pretty new to scripting, but I assure you it won’t be any zombie game!
Don’t limit yourself heywhite - Animating a twitchy ‘infected’ animal would be a similar process to animating a twitchy zombie humanoid character.
Just off the cuff here but your post gave me an instant idea. Why not modify your base concept just slightly by having the virus effecting the animals. It effects certain animals in different ways. The herbivores mutate one way and act a certain way, the omnivores act differently - they are mutated and maybe are the brains of the infection spreading and attacking the humans, and the carnivores are the minions of the omnivores.
I don’t know - that would be kinda cool! Different than another survival zombie game.
I totally agree with your statement. That’s why I chose dinosaurs for my first project! Something fresh. But my dream project is actually a post apocalyptic game similar to Fallout but with no zombies, mutants or anything out of the ordinary. Just people trying to survive in a resource depleted world. There would be bandits and also other suvivors to potentially team up with similar to State of Decay. Deep scavenging and crafting systems along with the other systems you would expect to see from a good survival game. It always blows my mind no one has capitalized on this already. Like you say there is so much untapped potential here and is definitely going to be my next project. The good thing is I now have a very good framework in place for all of these features once im finished with my current project!
That is the thing Jaqal. No one bothers with the deep crafting system when you can have open world Call of Duty zombie killing. What is even more sad is that in the current state, any survival game is just a player killing spree.
I hate Rust. I actually regret the 20 dollars spent almost a year ago… I tried getting into it so many times, but I always feel nothing when playing. There is no community. 90% of the player will just shoot you on site for no reason. This is exactly the opposite of what would happen in an apocalypse. All the species of these planet, including ours, bound together every time an outside threat appears. You don’t go around killing every person you find when your race risks extinction.
The reason many games like rust get away with this is because they don’t punish or reward the player enough for social interactions. 99% of these games take the safe route and build a generic one size fits all model trying to please everyone but lose out on that rare feeling of actually meaning something in the game world. Very few ever capture that magic that we all search for each time we start up the “generic game of the month”. I am striving everyday to capture that rare experience and bring it to others whenever I work on my project. That immersive experience that takes you into another world. The game you always want to play and think about when your not.
