Well it is time to make the jump to Unity, I am very excited about this, as Unity looks like a great product to develop games with, and in time will only get better.
In the topic I asked about a Mac pro, Windows, and playing PC games on it. Now I am at the point where I do not care about all that dual boot junk, since I will just upgrade my PC to get a gaming system. I would just use my Mac as a dev tool period.
So I put another question to you all. My partner and I, are purchasing two iMacs in the next couple weeks, and we are wondering if the system we chose will handle development with Unity, Maya Photoshop, we decided on the following:
20" iMac
2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB Memory
250 GB Drive (external drive for asset storage)
Ati x1600 (256 MB version)
I am a PC user so this MAC stuff is new to me. We are willing to buy macs just for the sake of Unity and game development. We are currently using 3D Game Studio and Torque Products.
So are the iMacs we have chosen to purchase more than enough for developing on this platform? This is all we can afford currently.
Oh one other thing… The x1600 ATI card in thes mac, it supports Pixel Shader 3.0 right ?
Thanks again guys for you’re help. The community is also one of the MAIN reasons for the jump.
i have a 20" intel imac i love it. the vid card i have with it (128MB X1600) could be a bit better but for general purpose gamedev its fantastic IMO. i don’t have maya but just make sure you have that 2 gig of ram you should be good to go.
as far as the 3.0 shader model, it says it does here:
That’s the exact system I develop on and use every day to run Unity, Photoshop, Maya, and everything else I need in ym full time work. It’ll do fine.
The rumours are that within the coming weeks Apple will release updated 20 and 24" iMacs that will be thinner, brushed metal (like the Macbook Pros), and have the Santa Rosa chip in them and possibly even the glossy new LED displays. Possibly also the newer nVidia 8600 modile graphics cards. The 17" is rumoured to be end of line.
If you can, wait at least two weeks. Then buy from an Apple storw who will give you either $ back or an exchange if they release a new model within 14 days of purchase.
If I had to guess, I’d say the rumours are very close to true this time.
The rumors are all around us in regards to the new sleek iMacs. It could be anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 months before the new systems come out, and our client needs this demo done somewhat soon. With that said my paycheck from my client, should clear in a week or so… so of course, between now and then if the new iMacs are announced with a solid release date, I will hold off as long as I can in hopes of getting the newer hardware.
However if the new iMacs are not out VERY soon, I have decided to purchase Unity Indie (for now, pro later) . . . . of course and the following system.
iMac 24"
2.16 Mhz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB Memory
500 GB HDD
Nvidia GeForce 7600 256 MB Videocard
3 Year Apple Care
I also just purchased a MiniStack V3 with another 500 GB HDD for external firewire back up…
I think for the next couple years this will serve fine for developing with Unity.
I am really looking forward to developing on the system and with unity. I am also looking forward to getting to know you guys more and help out where ever and when ever I can.
