Tiny, tiny world- microphotography as inspiration

Scientific American just released the top 20 entrants in the 35th annual Nikon Small World competition. Truly amazing and beautiful, the things that lay just beyond our perception. Check it out:

How does this relate to games? Just that inspiration is so close. Take the 15th photo as an example. That would make one SERIOUS level boss. Except that it’s only 1/4" long.

As the creatives behind the games, we have the ability to make people aware of the things they may not take the time to see. This is a good example. Anyone feel like designing a game based around survival of the very, very small? It’s a primal and violent world down there. Might be fun.

See you in San Francisco for the Unite09 conference.

Yeah, it’s a great idea. It has been done to some degree. Can’t remember the name of it but there was at least one AAA game where you played as a bug (started as an ant?) battling for survival against tarantula’s and the like. Think you became a “tougher” type of bug as you won battles. Kind of up the food chain IIRC. Really don’t remember it that well or even if it was ever released. A couple years ago maybe? Someone chime in with the name.
Have a blast at Unite!
